I'm usually a big proof head but my 104.3 is great. I haven't tried many others due to the cost.

Stop drinking Still Austin. Every sip you take is a donation to sips.
I have a couple "tri-barrel" cask strength bottles from Ironroot in Denison that are very solid. I think they still do email list lotteries for those releases, but they're another Texas distillery to keep an eye on.Bigfootisreal said:
Realizing this is a bourbon forum, so will have to agree about most Texas bourbon. However, I really enjoy Balcones single malt! Not a bourbon, and a different flavor profile, but their various finishes produce some really good whisky. And its hard to beat Lineage at $36 a bottle. Had some good Treaty Oak and really enjoyed the Rebecca Creek Spanish Oak. Just my two cents. Plus Kentucky has been making bourbon for 200 years or so- Texas is in its infancy- hopeful it continues to imrpove!
It's Texas limestone water. Not the same as Kentucky limestone water. And there also remains the climate issue.wofo_db said:William Larue Weller said:This is where you lose me as a result of liking Garrison Brothers... I just don't believe any whiskey distilled in Texas can be very good. Best I've tried is some Still Austin products, and even still, I'd rather drink Wild Turkey Rare Breed (or honestly even WT 101). Our water and weather are not conducive to making good whiskey.MarathonAg12 said:
Had their oldest barrel that was their own distillate and we were blown away
GB uses a limestone aquifer which is just like Kentucky water
Not sure how many barrels, but so far Barrels 30 and 32 have been the two best I've tried. I believe they were around 130 and 126 proof. With that said, a number of the lower proof barrels in the 101-106pf range have been delicious. I'm about to kill Barrel 19 (104.5pf) and it's awesome. I'd avoid Barrel 13 (98.8pf) - I had one and returned it to Total Wine it was so bad, although my bottle had leakage so it may have been corked.bigtexD said:
Does anybody know how many barrels they released of the RC16? To those that have had tried samplings from multiple barrels, which one did you like best and what was the proofing? I've seen barrel numbers up to 31 and proofs as low as 98-120's.

I heard Barrel 13 got proofed down with Texas Limestone Water.
Yeah it is so incredibly good. Every bottle of older barrel proof, pre-MGP Seagrams distillate that I've tried has been amazing, regardless of the label. Not surprising they wouldn't let you get a barrel, I imagine what they have left they will save and release as 18 or 20 year in a couple years.MarathonAg12 said:
Hehe
Man you can crush some RC16! I tried to get a 16 year for our barrel pick…..wasn't successful.

Super generous of you, I appreciate it. Unfortunately I'm up in Dallas and don't have any trips down that way planned any time soon. But thanks so much!FTAC2011 said:William Larue Weller said:That is sexy... I'm jealousFTAC2011 said:bigtexD said:

Most of them taste like the older MGP Old Scout picks and the pre-MGP Very Old Scout picks.suburban cowboy said:
anything you'd compare it to?
We could not have more different palates lolMarathonAg12 said:
My crew and I all think the Spanish Oak is better than RC16. Hands down. Great juice for about $60 too!
Flame away.
Have you had RC's 12 Year Barrel Proof stuff? Its more MGP juice and like at 98 proof.William Larue Weller said:Most of them taste like the older MGP Old Scout picks and the pre-MGP Very Old Scout picks.suburban cowboy said:

Yes, I tried one and liked it but if I recall correctly, it could have used some more proof in my opinionMarathonAg12 said:Have you had RC's 12 Year Barrel Proof stuff?
