I just bought a bottle of Hudson Baby Bourbon... has anyone tried it yet?

I was reading that it's aged in a unique warehouse, lined with heaters that power the distillery’s stills. As a result, when the stills are running during the day, the warehouse becomes incredibly hot, causing the oak casks to expand and interact with the whiskey.

In addition, each night, when the stills are dormant and the temperature cooler, bass speakers, which have been placed throughout the warehouse, play loud rap music with deep bass. Due to the deep bass, the bourbon is agitated while the barrels themselves experience micro-expansions and contractions. This sonic aging process — unique in the industry — adds to the interaction of the wood and whiskey.

I thought that was a pretty innovative process, I'll let you know what I think.

Thanks for the info, Greg. I will post a review when I open it up later this week. I think the availability is a little broader now since he got it at one of the smaller Spec's in Austin. Looking forward to it.

I've enjoyed Hudson Baby Bourbon for the past couple of years, but I live a bit closer to the Hudson valley (I'm in Philly), so it's a little easier for me to get a hold of it.

I love it. Great sipping bourbon. In fact, it was the first "micro distillery" offering that got me to explore other micro distillers around the country

I tried Hudson for the first time this past weekend and really enjoyed it. I'm a little upset I have overlooked it up to this point.

(not bourbon) I also tried TX whiskey and found it far too sweet. It was like straight caramel. Too sweet for me.

greg,

My take on the Old Pogue - very much a quality brand, nicely done, but perhaps a touch too much butterscotch for my tastes. I am enjoying it though, just not wiling to move it past some of my other favorites.

Just to bump this back to the top, I have to give props to the fine folks at Buffalo Trace. I started this evening with a healthy dose of Blantons with a piece of ice, then a snort of Rock Hill Farms with a splash of water and I am finishing with a finger of 2011 George T Stagg. Three great and very distinct flavors all from the same distillery. Those people are bourbon geniuses.

I've always held a special place for Maker's Mark because it was the first bourbon I drank with regularity. It typically does not do well in blind taste tests, and tonight was bad. It tasted horrible compared to Larceny.

Looked at Larceny yesterday, but bought bottles of 4 Roses Single barrel and 1835. Roses is one of my go-to's, thought I would try the 1835. Someone tell me about Larceny.

Atty Ag, I LOVE butterscotch, so that may well explain why I liked it so much.

All the same, I'm glad you're enjoying it, even if it's not your new favorite. Happy drinking!

Greg- Where are you in KY? I spent of few of my formative years there in Lawrenceburg (had neighbors that worked at Wild Turkey) and Frankfort.

One of my childhood friends now works at the Trace. I tried to hit him up for some Pappy, but he said they keep it locked up pretty tight. Oh, well.

Might try to find some Old Pogue next.

I've been hitting the Four Roses single barrel a lot, like candy.

I also had more of the George T Stagg last weekend and really come to enjoy it, so I'm rationing it.

I'm in Lexington. But I worked as an intern for almost a year in an office building that was a renovated Buffalo Trace rackhouse. It was always very hard to get in and out, when the distillery was shipping out the finished products, lots of semis in the shared parking lot. Also, that smell. Man I loved that smell. Made the commute to Frankfort and back entirely worth it.

Yep I remember that smell of mash. I was just a kid (and probably thought it stunk at the time) but it is definitely memorable.

Picked up a bottle of Bulleit 10yr last night and was very pleased. I like Belleit as a budget sipper and really opens up in a Manhattan or Old Fashioned. The 10yr has much more oak influence and is a little sweeter up front than it's younger, drier brother. It really opened up with a splash but at just over 91 proof doesn'treally need to be cut. For the little extra coin I think it's well worth it.

I've got a buddy going to the Derby this year and he said he'd pick me up a bottle that I couldn't get in TX. Any suggestions?

I made this last night while watching "The Americans" on TV.

Except I used more bourbon than two ounces.

Darn tasty!

If I'm not mistaken you appear to using good ol' Elmer T. there.

Just picked up a bottle of it for myself on the way home.

Heh, not my photo. It's from that blog. For my shake I used a cheap Very Old Barton that was abandoned at my house from Christmas for making eggnog. It served its purpose.

There's no shame in Very Old Barton for cocktails. That's what I use for my old fashioneds.

Why ruin good bourbon by adding other ingredients?

The point of a good cocktail is to enhance the alcohol, not mask it.

I drink over 90% of my bourbon neat, but if I'm having a cocktail I still want a great bourbon I can taste.

Save a few bucks and buy Four Roses Single Barrel - roughly 10 years old. Bulleitt is BS. Tom Bulleitt doesn't make anything. All of his bourbon is distilled at Four Roses and his "new" Rye is made out of Indiana. The only thing he has going for him in the future is the fact that his office is at S-W.

Tried two new bourbons tonight.

Pappy 15, and George T. Stagg.

The Pappy was awesome.

The Stagg was a bit disappointing, but that could just be because I had the Pappy first. I'll certainly give it another try.

A last hurrah through bourbon country tomorrow before I move back to Texas in a couple of weeks.

@ Greg - Give the Stagg a little air time and and one rock and you won't be dissapointed. Do you know which release it was? I am half way through a bottle of the 2009 and it only gets better with each pour...

I have almost finished my 2012 Stagg. The high alcohol content makes it tough the first time out. It does have to air out I have found. The best part about that is you can pour it in a Glencairn glass or snifter and spent 30 minutes just taking in the nose. The finish to me is like an amazing dark chocolate.

Odd that Stagg came up in the discussion. I poured myself some 2012 Stagg (142.8 proof) tonight to celebrate. I poured just a smidge of Ozarka spring water in two fingers worth. It's flat out delicious.

I missed the 2010 Stagg release and I am looking forward to popping the top on the 2011 as I think it was one of its oldest offerings at just under 19 years old at bottling. You are exactly right, you can just nose it for 30 minutes and be completely satisfied, just like the PVW 15.

I have no idea what year it was. I had it at a restaurant here in Lexington. I also had a glass of Pappy 20 the other day, and I have to say, the 15 is still my favorite, by a long shot.

Tried to order a 23, but they had just run out. Something left to aspire to I suppose.

Also tried Van Winkle 12 year reserve, and I don't think there was really anything special about it at all.
