I've noticed that here in CO as well. Bout the best you find is 2 month old stuff but that seems rare

I found it at HEB in Austin. I bought all they had and have checked every day since and no more has shown up. I would guess the HEB on Lake Austin Blvd might have some..

When I've been to Iowa and Wisconsin it's the same way. Everything is 6 months old… like bro, your brewery is right here. People used to call them on it and they would give bull**** answers like "Our IPA's are made to hold up for a year". So it seems like they just really don't care.

End of an era. I haven't been to Societe Brewing in a month or so, but since then the city has shut down their parking lot beer garden. Since 2020 they have had around 20 tables set up in the former main parking lot. Now it is repainted and back to a parking lot and they only have 4 patio tables outside. Sucks since sitting outside there in the afternoon is awesome.

Homebrew Dark Mild I brewed a week ago today. Served on "cask". Quite quaffable at 3.6%.

I'm at the in-laws in Georgetown. Can't recall if I've asked here before but any breweries worth checking out around here or maybe round rock? Might head down to jester king Tuesday afternoon. Barking armadillo looks like it could be interesting

Beers at Barking Armadillo just aren't very good. PHP would be your best option.

Damn, well good to know. Yea forgot to mention pinthouse is the only place I'd been to around here. Typically if I try and hit a brewery I drive down into town in Austin.

Used to have three (homebrew) beers on tap 24/7/365. Back when stainless soda kegs were $5 and glass carboys were free. We still have all the gear for all grain brewing, but you can no longer get the ingredients for a cost of one dollar a gallon of beer. It seems pointless to do all the work when you can buy it for the same price as making it.

I look at it like fishing or hunting. No one goes hunting to save money on red meat. It's about enjoyment of the process. I currently have 5 beers on tap.

Left to right: Berllner weisse, Hoppy Saison, Pale Ale, ESB, Dark Mild. I was going to brew an IPA but never got one of those round things.

ETA;I also have an oak aged Belgian Quad and a session porter in bottles but I screwed up and put the same color bottle caps on them so its always a surprise when you open one.

Even when I brewed a lot, I only used kegs. Bottling is a huge and unpredictable task. That is dedication. I salute you. Our brewing ended with the beer fridge being replaced with a freezer when the kids arrived. If I find reasonable bulk grains again, I might find motivation and another beer fridge.

sounds like you were in it for the wrong reasons all along.

never heard anyone say they like home brewing because it saves money.

For bulk grains, find a homebrew club in you area, they might do pallet purchases. You'd be getting 50lb bags for way under what you pay per pound at homebrew store.

Or even just getting single 50 lb bags is much cheaper. It's been 4-5 years, but I was getting 50lb base grain bags at $35-$40.

Completely wrong. We were in it for the beer. It's difficult not to notice the price for ingredients has gone up 10x. Why do you feel the need to manufacture a false narrative?

It was much different two decades ago. We could go to St. Patrick's home brew supply and find everything we needed. It was a lot of fun. We built recirculating mash systems, put temperature controllers on freezers to make lagers, etc. We never bought kits. We might have spent the same amount, but we were always upgrading the equipment.

well.. I'm also now pretty much paying $8 for 12oz pours of typical beers at breweries as well. when I started homebrewing a pint of craft was $3.

Of course ingredients have gone up.

yes, it was very different 2 decades ago. Not sure where you're going with it?? Can you not go to a homebrew store today and get what you need?
Can you not put a ranko on a freezer for a lager? That's what I did my last 4-5 years ('17-'22).

Lazarus is solid. Super kid friendly which is good and bad.
Hit up Hold Out if you have the time. Best brewery in Austin right now imo. Also very not kid friendly.

My HEB started off pretty good at pulling in a good selection of beers, including those newly distributed in our area. Now they're mostly back to Texas, and especially, Houston area beers. I'm guessing they just weren't selling.

If I see a 6 pack of something "new" or interesting, I'll flip it over to see it's well past it's fresh date.

They've has two singles of a Drekker IPA that has been on the shelf for months. I believe the brewed date on those was February. It's a bit embarrassing.

I was thinking about the cost of home brewing overnight. The most expensive beer in the lineup I posted above is the ESB. It cost me about $35 for the 5 gallons to produce not including the cost of electricity or equipment. That figures out to less than a dollar a pint which is pretty damn economical. The real beauty of homebrewing is the diversity of styles that you can have. I am not sure when, if ever, the IPA craze will subside (and I admit that I have participated willingly) but where are you going to get a dark mild on a beer engine? How about a standard Berliner weisse that is not overly fruited or lactosed. One of my favorite beer styles is English Style IPA, not easy to come by. Keep in mind that I live in the middle of the Piney Woods and the closest Spec's, Total Wine or even an HEB is well over an hour away.
