My last post was from the airport, and I was hoping I had some West coast beers in the fridge when I got home. Somehow I forgot that I had a case of these. That was a good feeling opening the fridge.

One of the few JK beer i hadn't tried yet. Still holding up pretty great. Very unique beer with lots of blueberry flavor still.

Jah, your bottle is waiting for you.

Finally Found one.

However it was just one. They broke the 4 pack and two cans were all that was left in the store.

Anyone into Oktoberfest beers? So far I've had the St. Arnold, Real Ale, and the Thirsty Planet Smittlefest. So far, the Smittlefest has been my favorite, with the St. Arnold coming in second. Is there anything in the Austin/Round Rock area worth seeking out for an Oktoberfest beer?

Live Oak, ABW, and Zilker Park are good. Also heard Rahr won Gold for theirs at GABF.

I haven't bought any yet. But talked to a Real Ale rep who was sampling beer at HEB and he mentioned that Rahr won gold for theirs at gabf. Another Texas brewery I haven't heard of got bronze, Oak Highlands. And on a weird note from gabf, Saint Arnold Oktoberfest won silver in the Scottish-style ale.

The Tupps one is pretty good. I may be partial since I just drank it for 3 days at McKinney Oktoberfest.

St Arnold won the same awards at GABF last year for Oktoberfest (Scotch Ale category) and Amber (ESB). They really know how to pick their categories, and how those categories are judged.

Delayed GABF post:

This was my first year at GABF, working all three days with plenty of time to walk around. I'm sure this could be a super long post, but instead of trying to recall every good thing, here were my favorite two booths I visited this year:

Beachwood absolutely blew me away. I already knew I loved their IPAs, but have never spent money on their sours (apart from their collab with us at Crooked Stave), nor tried any of their stouts. I have very little to nitpick about any of it, and Funk Yeah-- their geueze-style sour-- was every bit worth the gold it won this year. In fact, I might have liked it a hair more than Duck Duck Geueze, which I tried for the first time here. Thankfully, some bottles were left in shops this week and I picked up this really lovely Framboise, which was not at GABF:

Finally, keep an eye on The Referend Bier Blendery out of Trenton, NJ, an all-100% Spontaneous old world-style brewery. Their beers were unbelievable and I never saw more than one or two people at the booth, not counting the times we would come over from our CS endcap to crowd their table for a while. I can't recommend their beers highly enough.

Has anyone else tried The Referend before? They were totally new to all but one co-worker from the east coast.

Same to you! It was a nice surprise to meet a Beer Threader I don't know (which is most of you, I admit).

I thought Real Ale Octoberfest was average, at best. I enjoy Sam Adams more than that one.

That seemed really weird to me.. octoberfest winning a scotch ale category.
