I don't know why this popped in my head after so many years (C/O '01), but I seem to have somehow forgotten the exact fish whip-out. To my memory, it went:

fish Jones: Howdy! fish Jones is my name, sir!

Mr. Smith: Nice to meet you, Jones. My name is Smith.

fish Jones: Nice to meet you Mr. Smith, sir! I'm from {hometown, state} taking {major}, sir!

Mr. Smith: Well, I'm from {hometown} taking {major}.

I can't seem to recall the ending, or if I'm conflating different parts. Any refreshers would be appreciated.

fish Jones :"Glad to meet you Mr. Smith, Sir"
Mr Smith: "Glad to have met you fish Jones"

Or that's how I remember it ending

What you have is how I remember it going down.

Wasn't there a fake whip-out that fish would play on pssiheads by saying their handle was Fish Humpit?

fish Jones: Howdy! fish Jones is my name, sir!
Mr. Smith: Nice to meet you, Jones. My name is Smith.
fish Jones: Nice to meet you Mr. Smith, sir! I'm from {hometown, state} taking {major}, sir!
Mr. Smith: Well, I'm from {hometown} taking {major}.
fish Jones: Glad to meet you Mr. Smith, sir!
Mr. Smith: Glad to meet you fish.

This was the new army whipout (per the Bulls when I was there). Sometimes during my time, possibly zip year, it got reverted back to the old way, which involved more more back and forth.

f: Howdy! Fish jones is my name, sir!
S: It's Smith, fish Jones.
f: Glad to meet you Mr. Smith Sir, where are you from Mr. Smith sir?
S: I'm from __ fish Jones, where are you from fish Jones?
f: I'm from ___ Mr. Smith sir. What course are you taking Mr. Smith, sir?
S: I'm taking ___ fish Jones, what course are you taking fish Jones?
f: I'm taking ___ Mr. Smith sir. Glad to meet you Mr. Smith, sir.
S: Glad to meet you fish Jones.

That's if I recall it correctly. Obviously I did it a lot less as an upper classman than as a fish. But the idea behind it was that you increase the back and forth, and the opportunities to say each others' name. Per the old Bulls on the Quad, 2nd semester there wasn't much whipping out because they knew everyone's names because they said it so often during a whip out. I know for a fact that I often forgot an upper classman's name within a few minutes of a whip out, unless it was someone I had seen around before.

I was at A&M 1967-1971 and this is the way I remember it, too, though with fewer contractions which I sort of fixed in the quote.

There was also a way of initially responding to the fish depending on your classification but I can't remember it exactly.

For example, a p-head might respond "My name is Smith, fish Jones."

A sergebutt said "Smith is my name."

Zip said "Mine's Smith."

I am sure there were variations in the pattern similar to this, but I may be misremembering the specifics.

Bulls on the Quad. How lucky we were that a Bull on the Quad was a rarity.

You can find the current whip out in The Standard.

I remember the fish version being rote and unchanged while the upperclassmen would change their responses out of boredom/entertainment.

Here's the fish version, which is a little different from how I remember. I don't remember asking the upperclassman questions, just telling them my info and they would respond with theirs:
Quote:

The fish will extend his/her hand with a 90 degree angle between the upper and lower arm and the elbow pinned to the body.

fish: "Howdy, fish Jones is my name, sir/ma'am."
Upperclassman: "Howdy, Smith is my name." (sophomore) "Howdy, my name is Smith."(junior and senior)

fish: "Where are you from Mr/Ms Smith, sir/ma'am?"
Upperclassmen: "I am from (name of hometown), fish Jones. Where are you from fish Jones?"

fish: "I am from (name of home town), Mr/Ms Smith, sir/ma'am. What course are you taking Mr/Ms Smith, sir/ma'am?"
Upperclassmen: "I am taking (current major), fish Jones. What course are you taking fish Jones?"

fish: "I am taking (current major), Mr/Ms Smith, Sir/Ma'am. I am glad to have met you Mr/Ms Smith, Sir/Ma'am."
Upperclassman: "I am glad to have met you fish Jones."

Always a good feeling to whip out on the quad, and your zips hear you at the MSC.
