Curious those that have done this what it cost you, so I have an idea before getting a quote. Wanting to convert upstairs jack and jill bathtub to a shower as our kids only use our shower and I am tired of that. We have a tub downstairs in guest bedroom so not worry about resell value here. Thanks.

Yea my guess was 6-8k as well. You can save a lot of money by doing the demo yourself. Where are you at?

Does the existing tub not have a showerhead now ?

Just has a spout for tub use only ?

Is there a surround on it ?

Would more than likely be way cheaper to add a riser to existing valve or replace valve and add riser with new shower head than tearing it out.

Post a pic of existing tub if you can

If there's not a shower head there with the tub, tearing out that single side of the wall and adding a diverter and shower head there might be worth looking into. Losing a tub out of a bathroom serving two non-master bedrooms might come back to bite you.

keep in mind demo of a bathroom is usually a full day (maybe two), so evaluate that cost and see what % of the overall project it is...for a $6-$8k job it is significant, but for an entire remodel. that goes to $50-$75k, I'm gonna let someone else do it.

If you do it yourself. $3K max. Not that hard if you have the tools.

I did just the opposite for one bathroom. And a tub is $750 minimum. I still did it for $3500 and i retiled the floor also. If you do it yourself you will cut the cost in half or more.

Thank you! We are in Katy. Floor along tub and into each vanity section will be re-done as well. Appreciate the feedback and if we move forward will let you know what quotes we get. With 3 kids it may be tough to find a demo day! Note we will still have a master tub and 2 other shower/bathtubs in the home so doing just this one won't be a deal breaker if we ever leave.

And it's your house. You live there and don't need to justify the choice. Remodel the house for you, not for some future buyers opinion unless you already have a plan to move.

I tend to agree here ... the remodels I see are gut wrenching in how they tear out art & personal gems in order to gut all to install their own dreams weird.

That said, there are a minority of some lazy entitled sorts that expect a no-change, no-hassle move-in "as is" that are willing to pay more than "asking price", which may include all tableware, etc. These are looking for mostly a blank canvas and may be naive or flipping ....

Do you think that 50-70k figure is blown up due to moving pipes and electrical? Needing to remodel our master bath but wouldn't want to hit that range. I could have my head in the clouds though. Just needing new tile and to re-do shower. I can make sure vanity is updated myself etc.

First quote from our usual fixer upper guy was $8k. He always spits out a number and doesn't break it down for us until we ask. We have leftover floor tile from our main space, so we'll be putting that on the floor.

I am just finishing a bathroom remodel where we were originally just going to replace tub/shower with a ceiling to floor shower. Demo took less than a day. And on the 2nd day, my wife decided we were doing a full remodel minus the ceiling and top half of the walls.

To answer your question, I spent probably $2,000 on supplies to remodel the shower. I chose Kerdi based on the YouTube videos I watched to figure it all out. You can use less expensive materials to your liking. It seemed idiot proof to me to use Kerdi.

Kerdi backerboard - $400
2 Kedi curbs - $150 each (the curbs are 4' and I needed 5 '
2 Kerdi shower niches for shampoo, soap, etc $100 each
Tile $300
Mortar, grout and misc to finish - $150
Trim $100
Tools to complete - the remaining amount.

Total for the entire bathroom (it is about 7' x 9' or so) was about $5000.

We bought a new vanity, lighting, toilet, tile for the floor, paint, etc. I built shelves last weekend and have yet to install the new exhaust fan.

I'm 11 months into the project and almost done but it has been fun and frustrating. I only get a day or so a month to work on it. So, if you want it done quickly, find a contractor. If you want to save money, do it yourself and do what you like. Not what will sell later down the road. Homebuyers are fickle.

Is this the tub in question? That has a shower head already.

The question is for those that torn out tub and made it it a walk in shower.

I would caution against that for something like a kids or guest bath. If you have more kids or if you bring grandkids into the picture, you'll want the tub. If you're selling, odds are many buyers will want the tub for the same reason.

The guy has 3 other bathtubs in the house and isn't planning on selling. His kids like using a walk in shower so they use the master and he wants that to stop (I was that kid as well, so I understand...). He has no plans in move in any term currently.

Those points were already hashed out. Can we just stop this idea that we need to buildout our own houses for others instead of ourselves?

That shouldn't be too difficult of a project, trust me, I've done exactly one of them.

Seriously though, as I stated above, plan as much time as you need. It sounds like you have plenty of places for people to shower and they aren't using this one anyway. We were down to one bathroom for about 4 months until I had the shower done and then another few months until we had a floor and toilet. We were still using the shower, though. It got pretty rough with a wife and two daughters, good thing I can just use the bathroom outside if necessary.

There are multiple people to watch on YouTube. Make sure to watch quite a few and get some ideas for what you want to do exactly and then go back and watch when you hit a snag or if you aren't sure what you are doing. Studpack was one that I watched a lot.

I have quite a few projects to complete around the house that have been piling up for years and I have the confidence to do them now. I just have to find the time.

For 8 grand I would put my foot down and tell them to use the shower in their own bathroom

Is this the only bathtub/shower that currently exist upstairs ?

If so then making it shower only will potentially turn off future buyers with younger kids

If you move forward please use someone who knows how to do a pan and waterproof correctly because I have torn our numerous showers that were not done properly usually when the homeowner went with the lowest bidder but have seen some hack job shower installs on high end houses as well

Man, thought this would be a simple feedback post. For all the detailed people- 2 bathtubs already exist upstairs, leaving one still usable if this project moves forward. 2 bathtubs exist downstairs. I just needed $s from people who have done this. If not, move along.

Agreed.

One thing you shouldn't skimp on is a wet saw. Now when I say don't skimp, you don't have to buy the most expensive one but buy a good middle of the road saw, especially if you are going to be cutting 11x23 type tile. I borrowed a lower end saw and ended up buying a Kobalt 10 amp 7" sliding saw that served me well for the floor and the shower. If you need any help or advice, reach out. I'm more than willing to offer any amateur knowledge that I can.
