Adding a little humor here by spoofing shows on HGTV, and yes, I had a split level house once like the one they made fun of:

all pretty accurate.. except for one thing.

The whole 'reimagine the entry way', moving the front door to make it a split level; along with ripping up carpet to put in linoleum, redoing ceiling, adding a wall to close in the space, etc
Overall, in the 90s, people weren't buying a house and doing renovations right at move in, or talking about the renovations when house hunting like shown here. But I get why they added this dialogue in for comedic effect.

House hunters didn't even start until 1999. I'd say a few years into that, early/mid 2000s is when buyers started having ideas of renovating, tearing down walls, etc. during the buying process.

On a large scale anyway.

Yea for the longest time in the early 00's HGTV was like arts and crafts and a little remodeling. There wasn't social media where everyone was worried about what their house looked like and was furnished. Sure updates would be done but not on the level now.

That, the guy from Florida who did landscaping and planted lantanas and sago palms everywhere, and stuff like Trading Spaces. The ads for that show were better than the actual program.
