The switches are connected to the gfci circuit installed on the vanity but also the shower door swings against that wall so it is not possible to actually use them and be in the shower at the same time.

dumb question - but those two light switches seem awful close to the shower. is that allowed?

When you do the work yourself, anything is allowed.

Wouldn't worry about centering til on the toilet, I bet the water closet door will be shut most the time anyway.

Even if you start with a full tile against one of your walls it looks like you won't be left with a sliver on the other side. Looks to be 4 full pieces and almost another full piece.

I like your tile choice, it looks great!

It is allowed if you have a GIFI breaker.

We hired an electrician to re-wire our old bathroom and the switch was right next to the shower because of a pocket door.

Your tile is pretty. Almost there! Bet the missus will be glad to be home.

This was my thought in looking at it. While you would have a rip cut down one side, it would almost be a full tile.

What I understand is if you can reach a switch while in a bathtub or shower it's not allowed. If the door opens that direction then he should be good.

ONE WEEK + 4 UPDATE

Sorry for the brief post earlier but it was all I had the strength for. As I mentioned in a previous post, one of the materials I am using to help get this job done faster is Schluter's new Fast-Set mortar. The stuff is awesome but comes with one caviat; you have roughly 90 minutes to work with the stuff before it sets up and becomes unworkable. And this will happen to you in the span of 5 minutes.

Anyways the first frustrating part of the day was simply trying to get home to start because Floor & Decor had a ridiculous wait for their online pick-up so I was already in a bad mood to start the evening. That was the first mistake.

Second mistake, I still had to waterproof the tub surround but i figured i would do that at the same time that I mortared in the tile. The problem with that line of thinking is that I had not applied the Kerdi-Fix to the actual tub portion yet. By the time that got done, I had already used up 10 minutes of the mortar's workable time. By the time all the waterproofing got installed, I had used up another 30-40 minutes.

Third mistake was underestimating just how difficult it is to lay wood plank tile length wise in such a narrow area. Trying to spread enough mortar so that you can get whole pieces of tile down but still have enough room to lean over and balance yourself proved to be very difficult. And to make matters even worse, it would appear that I made this batch of mortar thicker than usual because I ended up with just about 25 minutes of workability before I reached back into the bucket and encountered this:

So embarassed to call myself a Sal DiBlasi YouTube subscriber after making such a rookie mistake. And to top it all off, this was my last bucket. So after cleaning up the tools, I made the decision at 1230 to venture over to Walmart to get another bucket to try to salvage some of this night because I had a grand total of 3 tiles laid.

So here is the rest of the work before I just got fed up with the whole thing and called it night (morning).

The tub surround

The tiles that I was able to get set

And the tiles that I have left to do

One week + 5 hopefully schedule is just get the rest of the tile laid and maybe, just maybe. get the vanity and linen closet installed if the tile sets up quick enough

LOOKIng good. Crap happens and mistakes happen. Glad you are not dead.

I'm glad too. At least your mortar is just mortar; the Jeep guy is in Botswana taking photographs of dung beetles. So as long as you are persistent, this small setback is soon to be in your rearview mirror.

Doesn't need GFCI protection, just has to be out of the zone of the tub or shower. Different rules if you have a hot tub, spa, jacuzzi, etc type tub. Not saying it might not be a good idea, but it's not required.

He said that would be best and the safest.

So he put in a GFCI breaker for the entire bath.

The air tub was on it's own breaker.

It was uncomfortable to have switches next to shower.

It starts some good arguments among residential electricians on whether it has to be 2' out, 5' out, 6' out, or 1mm out to not have GFCI protection. Then the "it just don't look right" rule kicks it and it will get done anyway.

If the whole bathroom - lights, plugs, fan, etc., is on one breaker, it's a no no.

Tub and fan/heater each have their own circuit.

Lights and outlets on the GFCI circuit.

So 3 for bathroom.

Finally a plan comes together. Even if the plan is to do one thing only. The floors are in and it isnt 230 in the morning. Could probably put the vanity in around 1 if I really wanted to but that will just have to wait till tomorrow.

Tomorrow is going to be all about millwork. With any luck when I go to sleep tomorrow night, all moldings are installed and I can prep and prime everything on Sunday, as well as put the shower tile in since this requires the molding to see where the extent of my tile needs to line up with. Unfortunately, the countertop guy doesnt take measurements on Saturdays, only installations, so that means countertops measurements wont happen until Monday, which means the earliest they will be installed is somewhere between the 26th and the 28th. Shower stall will be installed the same day and that will complete this bathroom. So dont know who that puts in the running for winning the completion bet.

Thank you for the updates with pics; and getting a good rest before a long Saturday is wise...

Tile looks good, bet you're glad to get that lay out part of it finished!

One criticism: part of any home improvement budget should include a line item for refreshments which you obviously have (see your day one and last night's pics). You have reached the stage where quantity needs to take a back seat to a libation that both quenches and refreshes as you sit and savor the reward of the day's completed task.

I recommend Smithwick's. I may lose the pool, but I would happily raise a bottle to the winner! Press on, friend!

Oh, has anyone noticed that the bball teams are winning as AggieFactor has been working? He is like a good luck charm....

No need to rush. Make sure you think things through so that you don't make any mistakes. Take a week or two off to regroup and enjoy your family/friends.
