I'll give you that. I feel like the stainless steel apron sinks will stick around, but I don't see the white porcelain ones staying. I also don't see the white kitchen sticking around forever.

We went with white cast iron single basin sink, undermounted. Not apron.

We didn't have balls to go all white kitchen, so we did white counter tops (with white sink), white island base cabinets, but espresso cabinets everywhere else.

So brings in another trend, different colored cabinets in kitchen. We jumped on the bandwagon.

It's very prevalent in model homes around my area the last few years but these model homes are doing it much more obvious like this:

I think that's gonna die hard fast.

We had a few family/friends that didn't even notice our white island cabinets right away. It's much more discreet. You have to be in the kitchen, in between island and main cabinets to see the white fronts. The back is sheetrocked..

I really like those apron sinks. Would put it in my sad little kitchen.

Fine, I'll say it. Farmhouse sinks may be functional, but I think they look like ass in 90% of kitchens.

Of course that's just my opinion and if I've learned anything from this thread, it's the fact that no matter how you feel about some type of home furnishing/design feature, there's guaranteed to be at least one person on Texags that thinks it sucks.

Traditional stainless steel in general is already on the way out. I was just in a meeting with GE, and they said the demand for SS appliances is dropping dramatically. Complaints are mainly that it's too sterile. The new trend is graphite, pewter, or black stainless.

as far as appliances go, yes I have noticed that trend. I was referring to sinks specifically (and yes, I know there are the different colored sinks). My point was that I think the white porcelain farmhouse sinks are a trend that will be outdated in the future, while stainless ones will have more stay power.

Its okay, I think most on here wouldn't like my sink (2 basin black composite granite), but I like it.

At the end of the day, while appliances can be expensive, they require little to no modification/construction to change out, so I don't know that it's gonna be a real deal breaker for most buyers.. If it is, then they are concerned about the wrong things.

Location/layout/lotsize

I learned that early on, and it makes searching for a home a lot easier. I've seen probably several hundred 'house hunters' and it amazes me how many people give their 'must haves' to the realtor and it's a combination of SS appliances/certain fixtures/wall color/flooring, etc.

I understand a lot of people don't want to move in and start ripping things out, but it's just crazy how someone thinks they can't 'live' in a house because of a wall color, or tile instead of wood, etc..

I'm with you. We just bought our "Forever Home" last year. My search criteria went like this:

  • 1/2+ acre
  • Mature trees
  • Price

I figured I could work with just about anything else.

Right there with you!

Re: stainless, we specifically stayed away from big slabs of the stuff. I didn't want anything to break up the flow of the cabinets so everything is panel ready or some other color.

We rarely use ours. Almost everything tastes significantly better heated on the stovetop or in the oven. I'll probably put it in storage soon and see how it goes.

Our requirements were location and cost, then mature trees. In the end we closed and worked on the house for 2 months prior to moving in. Then we continued to work on it another 9 months. We finished round 1 a month ago. This winter will be landscaping and working on an outdoor kitchen.

We haven't had one since we moved into our new house in April. Honestly, I haven't missed it much. We used to do those rice bags in the microwave a lot, but now just do it the old fashioned way on the stove.

I also did not know anyone could be so opinionated on drawer microwave vs regular microwave.

I considered going microwaveless, but we use ours mostly for reheating small amounts of liquids and other things that the oven would dry out too much. It serves that niche better than anything else does IMO.

Same thing, we moved in to our home in Early May, and haven't had one since there isn't a built in. Now that the wife is back at work, we are missing it more and more. But all summer it grilled veggies were much better than from the microwave.

Yep.. formula takes 20 seconds in microwave.. no way I'm getting out a pot and heating water on the stove. That's like, 20 minutes? I realize baby formula is very temporary.. but still, it's a solid year.

I reheat food every day in the microwave and it tastes awesome. Reheat on half power for better results.

You can also add a damp paper towel on top of the container you microwave in and it will help things from drying out.

Easily replaceable, but what about all the signs in homes. I'm talking about kitchen signs that say something like "meals and memories made here". These things are out of control. I looked at a home not too long ago and it had a sign in the bathroom that was something to the effect of naked people inside. I've even seen where people actually paint a message on a wall.

The number and size of these signs are higher in surburbia where there are a lot of non-working young wives/mommas who have time to think up what they consider clever and cute messages.

Funny thing is, we don't use it at all for formula. Mrs. Fife found one of these on a local mom swap FB group at a steep discount and it works great.

hah it doesn't surprise me there is a device like this. That's a little much, definitely gotta have the counter top space.

Half way through first baby, and now for all of second baby, I just go warm water straight from faucet right into bottle, add a few scoops powder and done. Wife still microwaves water in a pyrex measuring cup.

Since there wasn't a built in one we didn't want to sacrifice counter top space. And our kitchen isn't huge so keeping the counters less cluttered is the way to go. We're also getting rid of most of our cookware and only using cast iron. We use the grill 4 to 5 times a week. And we have an air popper from the early 90's for popcorn. Having gone for 15 or so years without a dishwasher, I'm very accustom to washing crap as soon as I'm done with it. Often efore I even eat when this gs can dry and making cleaning more difficult. Anyway, that's just us. I certainly can't think of times when I wish I had a microwave.

Yep I didn't have a microwave for about 3 years. I was living in a 1920's duplex that needed a kitchen remodel desperately. There was a lack of counter space as the longest counter was at most a 2 ft span. As such I had planned to get a cart to place a microwave on since I didn't want to take up valuable space.

I was busy and never got around to it for about six months. After living without I just decided to forgo a microwave for the time being.

In my house I have one of the stupid above the stove/cooktop model of microwave. If I ever remodel my kitchen the microwave is getting relocated maybe to a snazzy under the counter model. I'm not 5', but I'm kind of short so my microwave is above my head which is dangerous in itself. I can see no difference in a microwave drawer. And a new slide in stove with a proper vent.

Might reconsider the hot water from the tap. No one is supposed to drink that, sediment from your hot water heater. 30 seconds in the microwave is pretty quick. Can have that heading while I grab the bottle and formula from the pantry.

I love this... Its like pantone colors. Once everyone has it, they need a new product to sell you - why would you buy another stainless fridge... So they get the cool hunters to buy into the next "style" so now your perfectly fine and stylish fridge is "out" and you've got Joneses type problems because now you need a "graphite" fridge. Know what's coming back? Formica tops and white appliances.

Our kitchen is mismatched. As an appliance dies, we are upgrading to stainless. Will get a Stainless double oven when our black oven dies. Black Oven/Dishwasher, stainless Microwave/Fridge.

I never liked white because the handles get all dingy and beige.
