Scottie talked a bit too much, especially apologizing or describing what he did was stupid. But I can understand a straight-and-narrow guy like him being very flustered and cooperative to a fault. That said, some of what he said would have been problematic in court if he was Joe Citizen.

Bingo - and this is the bigger problem in this idiotic situation.

You got one cop that blew this incident up and made it something it never should have been. You have another cop discussing the situation with Scottie afterwards, essentially manipulating the communication and playing the game that some cops play in those circumstances. The police department should've immediately dropped this crap before doing the press conference or anything else.

Anyone of us would likely get railroaded in this situation. Forget making the tee time that day, some would just have to sit in jail.

"I was told to go this way by another officer, I didn't recognize you as police in the dark and rain, so I was confused and flustered when you approached my car in the manner that you did" was as far as it should have gone, if that. But again, all benefit of hindsight.
Yeah I understand his instinct is telling him hey I didn't mean any harm. I feel bad he got hurt. Surely this cop will be reasonable if I can just talk to him.

Just goes to show you can't trust them. Just listen to how this other cop is trying to take what Scottie says and twist the situation already. Now imagine he actually gets to talk to Gillis who is amped up and pissed because he fell down. That conversation is going to go WAY worse.

If I ever get in a situation more than a basic traffic ticket, I'm not answering anything unless I'm under arrest and then not without legal counsel present.

Speaking of...If one was ever in a similar situation as Scottie would the appointed legal be good enough to prevent one from being railroaded? I don't have a lawyer on speed dial - have never needed one other than to probate a will.

This is my concern.

Seems to me if I was in the EXACT same situation I'm either going bankrupt defending myself, or pleading to something avoid jail time, which may still include a felony.

Our legal system is not built on justice. I learned that it's a game to see who has the deepest pockets.

I get the DA has to do his due diligence and I guess it would have been FOIA'ed and likely came out anyway, but releasing all the video and audio to only then drop the charges is not doing the city of Louisville any favors.

Better to be transparent before dropping the charges IMO.

Cops ain't here to help; they're looking for reasons to assert their authority.

I can say I would have reacted the same way as Scottie. But after watching that video and seeing the way that cop was trying to manipulate him, that scares me. No way those charges get dropped against me as a low profile citizen. It wouldn't even make the news and I'd be stuck in jail for who knows how long.

I'm all for transparency but it's much more important when you're pursuing charges than when you're dropping them. Absent some suspicion of corruption/favorable treatment, not sure you have to prove why you're not pursuing criminal charges against someone. There was nothing about this to suggest they had to justify not charging Scottie Scheffler, of all freakin people, with a felony.

But I'm mainly shaking my head on how they've handled this from a timing standpoint. In the span of a week, they've held 2 press conferences. One where virtually nothing was said but that the legal process would continue to play out while releasing videos which borderline exonerated Scottie and had everyone questioning what they were doing. Then a second less than a week later to announce the charges are being dropped. Seems like a competent outfit would have reviewed the evidence and made a final decision on whether to prosecute before any press conferences were held. They could then have announced that after reviewing the available evidence, they did not believe a prosecution was warranted or that a conviction could be achieved and released the video (and lack thereof due to the cop's failure to follow policy) in support. Seems they would have all come out looking better if they had done that.

Yup, and those without any knowledge of the nuance or context of the situation if/when they heard about it would label you a "thug" or say things like "why didn't you just listen to the authorities? Play stupid games win stupid prizes LOL!!!!!"
