Yes, it's truly amazing that an MLB batter can hit a 100mph pitch cutting away with 25K fans standing and cheering or or a basketball player can hit a free-throw with opposing fans doing everything imaginable to distract them when the game is on the line, but a pro golfer can't hit a stationary ball on a tee without complete silence on hole #3.

Look, if you want to wear sweaters tied over the shoulder and pretend a PGAT tournament is high tea at the country club, fine. But the pretentiousness is why golf will continue to lag behind other sports.

Couldn't careless golf lags other sports as I'm not a fan of golf as a spectator. But I'm a participant of the game and will continue as long as I can unlike other sports sans pickle ball... And not a fan of it either. I'm sure you love your 4 some cheering you on as you set up for your next shot playing golf.
I don't need an excuse to say I suck or hit a bad shot. That's going to happen as a 15+ handicap with young kids and no club membership. I also don't need to pretend that throwing on slacks and playing golf somehow boosts my ego or esteem.

There's times I take rounds more serious and those times have nothing to do with my playing partners not being able to play music or joke around or have a good time. And I sure as **** don't want them to feel they can't heckle me or talk crap when I hit a bad shot. That's on me to focus and tune it out when necessary just like any other thing in life.

You seem angry and offended. Not sure why. And you keep alluding to golf dress code as some sort of a way to offend golfers. Yet you golf but use having kids and no membership as excuses for 15+ handicap. What gives dude.

Golf lags behind because it's an expensive sport that most can't access on a regular basis. Not sure there's much that can be done about that.

Except this is just an untrue excuse. Youth sports are where this matters and that's not the case today with uniforms and little league / travel costs.

My oldest daughter is a junior golfer. She's quite good and has exceeded a lot of expectations. While we can't afford a club membership, her JPGA program, practicing, or even playing on a JPGA discount doesn't make it any more expensive than other youth sports she explored.

The problem is many in the community still want to make golf the sport of the elite like its polo or hound hunting. This isn't 1800 Scotland and golf being played only by those owning a castle. So stop trying to pretend that's how it should be "enjoyed".
.

If you think golf is anywhere near as accessible as the big sports (football, baseball, basketball, soccer, etc), we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Even if you have clubs and balls (which aren't cheap), you're looking at probably $50 every time you play. Most people (much less kids) can't swing that regularly.

And organized sports is only a tiny portion of how people play/consume sports. People like basketball because they have a hoop in their driveway (or at a nearby park) and can play whenever they want. Same with throwing a football or baseball or kicking a soccer ball. Basically, once you have the ball, you can play these games in some form for free any time you want. And that's how most kids play them.

I can't believe we're arguing over whether golf has greater barriers to entry than other sports. Good lord.

You seem angry and offended. Not offended, just tired of people pretending their round has something to do with the royal elites of centuries ago. Git a grip. My kid was unsure of playing because she didn't want to deal with that pretentiousness when she could do something fun instead. It's a shame this stigma stops kids from wanting to play. And despite all the effort to convince yourself otherwise, it isn't helping golf.

Yet you golf but use having kids and no membership as excuses for 15+ handicap. What gives dude. Priorities elsewhere. My handicap isn't why I play the half dozen times I do. It or where I have a membership doesn't define my life like many on this board. I'd much rather caddy 40 times a year for my kid or spend the day with my family instead of driving out to the burbs to golf.

Because when I do play it's to enjoy myself and charis playing with my kids or friends. Not some random guy at a club.

Yes I think y'all are having two diffferent conversations/ideas of what constitutes participating in sports as a kid.

Sure, if you throw in select baseball or all of the private league costs for soccer, basketball, etc., golf may be at a similar level cost wise. But if you're comparing public programs to public programs, there really isn't a good comparison. And much easier to pick up a baseball, soccer ball, or basketball and practice out front than it is a golf ball.

Use clubs are $100 or less. It's $10 or less for a bucket of balls at any driving range. The practice greens and facilities are generally free.

It's $30 for my kid to play East River 9 if we decide to play a round and focus on course management. She's free outside of prime hours during the week if I or another adult play as well instead of just walking with her. It doesn't cost a dime to show up for an hour or so and chip and put on a great practice facility. Same at the course where she plays / practices.

The confusing comes when people expect the parents to play as well and tack in that cost. I don't have to play for her to play. I can caddy or walk with her if that's the point. And a club membership is necessary.

I would agree with that but the conversation started over golf being a niche sport and I pointed out it will always remain so because most will never play it regularly because of the costs to do so.

The majority of baseball fans aren't baseball fans because of their years of playing select ball. They are people who probably played a little little league and a lot of catch in the backyard. Golf simply can't offeran equivalent to that.

Agreed. The people on here were agreeing with the stigma. It wasn't the alcohol sales that were the problem. They didn't manage the attendance or have it staffed accordingly for the crowd they let in. Considering there general hundreds of off duty police at events like this, a couple of **** faced fans shouldn't have factored into the rest of the spectators if they had things under control. That's on the Thunderbirds.

It isn't the first nor will be the last event local authorities step in to shut down as it gets out of control. Blaming a couple of drunk fans that can't drink in moderation is just trying to deflect blame.

The problem is just like people on this thread did, it will be golf is only for the elite who respect the holiness of the tradition of a stuffy game. Not, well people were having fun at a great even and the Thunderbirds screwed up and didn't have proper crowd control in place and things got away from them.

Why is it that the PGAT wants to be mainstream just like the other big sports, but is the only sport that can't seem to have a good time?

Every other sport has huge festivities long before the even with alcohol sales and are much more aligned with high intensity, over the top people that are much conducive to a riot. Yet, there's rarely issues. And when there is, it's handled, people laugh, and everyone moves on.

Some drunks slide down a wet hill outside the area of play and we've crosses some make believe line of decorum. And they wonder why the vast majority of sports fans don't bother to watch.
the drunk sliding down the hill wasn't the problem yesterday. That wasn't even a blip on the radar on some of the things happening.

What happened? I wasn't there but talked to some of my friends that were. There were drunk people and they cut off sales. People with good any day grounds passes all came yesterday because of the weather. They closed the gates after 200K got in.

This thread took a weird turn when none of us, that I know of, were there.
from the videos I've seen it appears there were a lot of confrontations between the players and spectators. Mainly spectators yelling and saying things that were disrespectful and offensive towards the players. I think that combined with the drunk antics had the players completely pissed off and over the tournament. Just my two cents on the situation. I expect there to be a lot more security today with the players and spectators throughout the course.

Problem is this tournament was already a PITA for most pros because of the antics of everyone. This year only made it worse I believe.

While some hooliganism is allowed (and expected) at 16, only about 10% of the attendees are able to get in 16. So the ones who can't get in are just pretending they're at 16 on other holes now. That seems to be the biggest difference this year.

It also just doesn't make much sense in golf. People don't randomly scream and yell at other sporting events. They do it to help one team at the expense of the other. That's what home field advantage is. But to just want to yell at random golfers in the hope that you will cause them to mess up is just being a Richard. If that's what he's asking for to make golf less "elite," I'll pass.

Literally all the others have fans that can or almost can touch them on the bench. Other than tee boxes golfers have the unique ability to distance themselves from fans if they keep it in play. And tee boxes are no closer to warm up circles or in bound plays.

I think most on here are ok with the hijinks of 16. It's when that behavior becomes overly boorish on every hole and gets way out of hand it shouldn't be excused as ok just because this tournament has a hole that allows it.
