I think the rule is stupid. If you get a spot in a golf tournament that pays out cash prizes you should get the money for whatever place you finish, amateur or professional.
But if not for being an amateur, he wouldn't have been in the field in the first place…. Are you not getting that?
He was on a sponsor exemption. They wouldn't have given the exemption if he wasn't a amateur.
I know exactly how this works
Okay… then why would he deserve to earn his cash prize if the only reason he was able to compete for it was that he forfeited any rights to the prize?
He wasn't in the tournament because he was an ametuer. He's in the tournament because he won other tournaments that make him marketable by the tournament. They aren't inviting the #3,506 ranked ametuer because they're an ametur out of the goodness of their heart. They're leveraging his name, image, and likeness to draw in spectators to make a buck off his back. At the least, there should be a pre-agreed upon rate for him to play based on how he finishes. No different from any other person they invited (who has a chance to make a buck in the tournament) and the exact definition NIL.
Look, I think it's great that college kids get to play in some cool things by qualifying in other tournaments. But the tournament shouldn't get to profit off them either if that's such a holy grail thing. Put the money in a trust for when he turns pro. Or allow them the option to turn pro with the win and keep the money and fedex points. Or give them an NIL deal pre agreed upon.
Once again we're talking about another things the PGAT does where they're using players for their own gain when the reason they exist is to benefit the players. And many of you still wonder why we're in the situation we are with LIV.
These things take place in other sports as well and are handled very differently.
