I just looked it up. He's 82.
It's very reasonable to say (and most likely) that the mental grind wore him down, but he could also just be regressing to his mean and/or simply having a less than great day. He's only +2 for the day.
Sam either needs -2 to get to T8th, or needs a birdie and one of the 8th place players to bogey to get an invite back.
If Sam can make a a birdie or two get to -5 he's set for next year
