I'm looking to hear anyone's thoughts on the comparison between these golf clubs out in West Texas and how the golf/social/business opportunities are.

Any information is greatly appreciated!

There is a thread buried on this forum somewhere, but I'll throw my $0.02 in. Depends on what is most important to you and where you are located to a degree (small metroplex, not like anything is more than a 30 minute drive).

Best golf? Probably OCC with the two well-maintained courses, not to mention different styles. MCC still very nice with the 18 redone in 2015 and the 9-hole Judy short course. Great practice facilities at both. Greentree is about to start redoing the west and east 9's which from what I'm told will be a multi-year ordeal. MCC has been known to assess the membership without much warning, and your options are to either pay or leave.

Best social? Depends on your definition, but MCC is going to be your old Midland money and executives. Greentree will be more of your salesmen, managers, short-term midlanders.

Best business? Use the social comment as a guide. Looking for investors? MCC is probably your better bet.

Not sure about initiation and dues for OCC or Greentree, but MCC is north of $30k for full golf and I believe somewhere around a 6-9 month waiting list. Dues around $700/month.

Midland CC - More E&P guys, executives, long time royalty check families. High initiation and high monthly dues, waiting list to become a member and have to have a sponsor, once a member you have a sellable voting stock when you leave. I would say this is definitely the best course out of the three. Fun par 3 course and an excellent practice facility.

Green Tree CC - Probably more of a mix of E&P and Service. Mid level initiation (In August 2020 I was told by their membership director it is $20K initiation that you can pay off up to age 35, $615 per month dues, no cart fee). (3) 9 hole courses that they have recently renovated. I think they might still be in the process of renovating. Good practice facility. The clubhouse is older than both Midland and Odessa. Lots of members.

Odessa CC - Definitely has more Service side of the business as members. High initiation and average dues. (2) 18 hole courses. Great clubhouse and an incredible practice facility. Fun atmosphere. Great staff and great members. If you live in Midland it will take you 20+ mins to get to the club.

All of the above have good restaurants, tennis, pools, and workout facilities.

Ranchland Hills - I joined Ranchland last year due to COVID pricing and the sale of the club to the school district. The prices were too good to pass up to have easy access to a good golf course. I paid $750 initiation and the monthly dues are $335. Cart fees are $15 per person. The golf is private and the restaurant is public. The members are honestly a mix of E&P, Service, Landman, Engineers, Pumpers, etc. Members lounge has card tables & craps table. I ran into Johnny Manziel and Jason Terry up there one night. They put on good member tournaments, my favorite being night golf. Once my friends move away or leave the club I will probably join Green Tree, if I am not on a Corporate account.

If you are looking to take customers golfing, they will want to play MCC, OCC, and GT every time over Ranchland.

If you ever need a playing partner or are looking for a game, let me know. We have at least one every weekend.

MCC was the old Nike Tour spot.

It actually was originally at what is now the links course at OCC, when it was still Mission. When they sold to OCC, OCC didn't want to deal with it, so it moved to MCC.

I grew up in Odessa and my parents and grandparents were members of both, so that's where I learned the game. The GM of OCC is a high school friend of mine.

I'm about to join Greentree. I fall in the category of being in sales and dealing with operators. I think that's the best option for me but I don't think you can go wrong with any of the 3 clubs. MCC is very proud of their initiation fee.

Don't know it for a fact, but most likely the case. Just pick up the phone and call, Greentree won't be afraid to answer questions like this.

Greentree is 20k initiation. You can pay half up front and the other half over a year span.

MCC is 30k

I appreciate all the feed back.

I went and toured MCC the other day and I was previously a member at GTCC when I lived there but wanted to hear other people's opinions on the current state of affairs over there.

I have concerns about GT shutting down the East course here soon and what they will do with tee times. Ive been hearing horror stories of difficulty of getting on and the courses just not getting a breather. Also, I have a buddy that is relocating to Houston (CXO/COP) that has been a member for 2 months and GT is demanding $13K since they haven't been members for 2 years.

What I do like about MCC is the fact that it is an equity membership that I believe you can sell back.

Definitely torn but leaning MCC as of right now, even with the 6-8 month waiting list.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

When I join Greentree I'll be happy to host you out there and I wouldn't be mad if you had me out at MCC in return!

You must have nailed the bottom of the initiation fee slump. I joined RH over the summer and I paid $1,750 for the initiation but I know someone who got in at $1,250 just 6 weeks later. Played with someone last weekend who had just joined and said it's going up to $2,000 starting this month.

Good to see a fellow RH member on here. Holler at me if you ever want to play. Am amble to get out there most weekends and currently around an 11 hdcp. Shoot me an email dallasag12 ta @ gmail . com

From my experience, if MCC is an option, that's where you want to be. I have multiple friends at all 3 courses and MCC seems to be just as welcoming to new members and making the new guy part of the cool kids club as any country club I've ever heard of.

Everything I would say has already been said.

I think where you join depends on what you are looking for in a club.

OCC - IMO is easily the best value of the 4 when it comes to the actual golf. The thing that edges it ahead of MCC is that you have two courses and there are always tee times available. The initiation is steep, but dues for a full voting member are around $500-$550/mo. Membership can be a little stuffy. Mostly service industry guys.

MCC - Best course out of the four, but can be tough to get tee times on the weekend. If you are looking for the posterity aspect this is where you want to be. Lots of execs and Midland mafia are members here. Mainly E&P or independently wealthy folks. Monthly dues around $750

GTCC - Great social scene. McKinley knows how to throw a party at his tourneys. Courses can be hit or miss. They struggled this past summer and almost lost some greens.
From what I understand they are planning a sizeable reno in coming years. Tee times can be hard to get on weekends here also. Mixture of Service and E&P.

RHCC - Fun course that was on the chopping block for awhile with the School District buying it. I can confirm that initiation has gone up to $2k. Langdale also knows how to throw good tournaments. The comment about Johnny and the JET being out there for a tournament was true. He'll probably be back out for the Alvarado invitational if I had to guess. The restaurant here is really good and they have multiple theme nights for different types of cuisine. Mixture of service and E&P.

Bottom line is that each club has pros and cons and it depends on what your are looking for...

OCC - Best value for strictly golf. Two courses. Not much of a social scene.

MCC - Most prestigious. Best golf course by a hair over OCC.

GTCC - Best social scene. Course can be hit or miss

RHCC - Best value for initiation and dues.

Emailed!

Yea I joined June '20 with 3 others on the same day. We got a group deal and I think negotiated down even further. I'm a 13 (trending up recently...) according to Grint and play with a couple of 10-12's and 25+. We have fun.

This.

GreenTree will be a mess for the next 18months but it's a fun place to be a member.

Honestly if I was just choosing any of the courses I would choose whatever I live closest to. If that doesn't matter then I would most likely choose OCC.

Agree with all comments made. We joined GT when we moved here in late 2016 because it was close to where we lived and initiation was significantly cheaper then vs MCC ($6K for GT vs $25K for MCC at the time). I had an equal amount of friends at each so it was a coin flip from that standpoint.

Honestly, I enjoy MCC course so much better than GT and enjoy playing over there as often as I can. But I have high hopes for GT being just as an awesome course after the remodel. It'll suck only having 18 the next 2 years but I think it'll work out fine. Just May be a little tougher to get peak time tee times, but I hardly play at those times anyway.

I am leaning towards joining MCC as of right now but I have a bit to still decide what is best (end of April).

I enjoy Brian over at GTCC and have a lot of friends that are still members over there but I feel that I may have better opportunities expanding my business contacts at MCC, which I know no one at. I dont know, I go back and forth just about everyday trying to do whats more comfortable (GTCC) v what has better facilities and people I can network with (MCC).

Thanks again for all the input!

Yep, joined MCC and haven't looked back. Love it here and only gripe would be their gym setup but rumor has it that it will be remolded after the A Street entrance.

Let me know if you have any questions or want to meet up to look around/play golf/drink a cold beer.

Last I saw they only had 7 holes shaped, but maybe I missed something. I can't see it opening next year. I don't live all that far from that area, I'll head out that way soon to take a look.

Makes more sense than 2022. I'm sure it will be great, but as much as anything- I hope it opens up some play on the other courses in town.

Heard Red Feather would have practice facilities open this summer. Course should be open, summer of 2023.
