dc509, as chance would have it, Dad and I were joined in a Sunday afternoon round of golf at Shady Oaks by Royal Hogan, Ben's older brother. Royal's personality was as outgoing as Ben's was reserved. Afterwards, in the Men's Grill, Royal learned that I wanted a new set of irons for my graduation present. "What are you doing tomorrow?" he asked. I had a school holiday, so I was available. "Meet me tomorrow morning at our office and plant, and I'll show you how they are assembled; I'll fit you with a set". I did and he did.

As I was about to leave, he asked, "do you want to meet my brother?". "Yes, sir!", I replied. He made the introduction in Ben's office, and after brief pleasantries, Ben asked, "are you Gilbert's son?". After acknowledging that I was, he replied, " I know him, he's a good man.".

For almost sixty years I have treasured that moment.
That is such an awesome story! Thanks for sharing.

Wow, thanks for sharing. I love reading stories like this. Times are so different; likely this would not happen these days.

Hogan story

Some of my friends got to play Shady Oaks years ago.
It was about 40 degrees and windy but they had driven for hours to get there and decided to play anyway.
They hit a few practice balls and then came back into the clubhouse shivering - looking for some hot coffee to warm up.
Sitting at his usual spot at the table with the lazy Susan was Mr. Hogan.

Golfers: Morning Mr. Hogan
Hogan: Morning - y'all gonna play golf today ???
Golfers: Oh yes Mr. Hogan. We are excited to play Shady Oaks.
Hogan: Great. If I'm still around when you finish, I'll give you a tip.

The golfers were giddy. Not only had they seen Hogan (and talked to him) but he was going to give them a tip after the round.

The golfers head to the first tee. It's even colder and windier than before but they start their round. After about 4 holes, they can't take it anymore and somebody suggests that they head back to the clubhouse. It's a popular idea after one of them suggests that Hogan might still be in the clubhouse.

Hogan: Back so soon
Golfers: Man it was brutal out there.
Hogan: Ready for your tip.
Golfers: sure (( thinking can't believe this is about to happen))

Hogan: (casually looks up from his newspaper and says)

Don't play golf when it's less than 50 degrees. Now you can tell all your buddies back at your club that you got a lesson from Hogan !

I've heard Ridglea raised their prices? Any one have any idea if there's a waitlist?

Also- are both courses open 7 days/week? I work odd hours so weekday Am tee times are critical for me.

North course closed Monday and South closed Tuesday I believe.

That is correct.

RCC did just recently raise initiation fees as of February 1. As far as I know there is not a waitlist right now. Happy to answer any more questions.

How negotiable are initiation fees? I just got the latest info on colonial and wanted to get some thoughts.
grego

Not sure about everywhere but I know colonial not negotiable.have heard stories in the past of discounts for big groups coming in. Mira Vista is the only FW one I've personally heard doing that. And they were in big trouble at the time.

We had some friends here in SW Ft Worth who
mentioned they were looking at trying to get a group deal with Ridglea with a bunch of friends but I don't think they got a discount.

I'm not aware of the RCC process being negotiable, but it never hurts to just ask Leanne. They might be willing to work something out.

I'm a member at Shady Oaks. The renovated course is remarkable. They did a tremendous job preserving its integrity and cleaning up what needed to be cleaned. Mr. Hogan would be proud. Limited memberships means no tee times.

If you enjoy golf and can afford it, or have an employer like mine who offers it as a benefit, it's the way to go. The pool is great, the tennis center has been updated and we've added a pickleball court. The membership have spent millions on facilities in the past couple of years updating the clubhouse, etc.

Ridglea is the best value. Fantastic facilities and golf for what you pay and they run membership drives regularly.
Rivercrest has a great pool scene, but the course is a glorified muni.
Mira Vista is fun to play a couple of times per year, but I wouldn't want to play it regularly.
Colonial is short and tight, and as someone else said, you have to fight the tournament issue. They've added a pool (finally) and their tennis center is exceptional.

Second the value on Ridglea. New GM has that place running like a machine. Food has improved, brand new 19th hole renovation, as well as upgrades to outdoor patios, upstairs lounge and card rooms, and some new facilities around the pool/cabanas are great. Plus you get two courses for your dues. Can't beat that for the cost.

Have my interviews with Colonial next week. Pricing isn't negotiable, but the initiation and monthly are pretty reasonable IMO at least competitive.

Initiation will probably increase sharply as they vote soon on upgrades the PGA is requesting.

How was colonial?

Has anyone ever looked into or have an opinion on Rolling Hills or Shady Valley?

Definitely a further commute for us, but we are considering some more updates to the house this summer and may be going with a more affordable option for a club until next year.

Just got back from Rolling Hills in Arlington- nice little club that's selling out to a developer in 2022. Have cheap three month memberships and has a pool, etc. Course is definitely less nice than others but not bad considering price.

Dunno still getting quotes for house stuff. We'll see

heard from two members that Colonial is about to go to the members with a vote to redo the course - if passed they will shut down for a year.

My brother in law is a member at Rivercrest. Fun course, but VERY social. Definitely old Fort Worth money. I have played Shady Oaks a few times. Not after the recent renovation. My brother-in-law has played and says it is great. I have not played Colonial, but I have been invited. Looking forward to the experience.

From "History" I would rank them

Shady Oaks
Colonial
Rivercrest

Must admit, if money was no option, even without playing the course, I would chose Colonial.

I am not a big golfer, but ran across this thread. I would take part in the pool, dining, and social activities year round. Can anyone give me an idea if these clubs also have social memberships, and any idea on the initiation costs do they differ from the golf initiation costs?

Yea but they will negotiate deals with Shady Oaks and at least one more course. Probably RiverCrest and one more so the games will go on. Pretty good group of private courses in Fort Worth.

I would probably choose Shady over Colonial. I have played both over a hundred times. Mainly for the focus on the golf and the members and not having to deal with the PGA Tour. And the course is fantastic and if you should still be able to find occasional games at Colonial.

Probably on the order of 5-15k depending on the club.

We're taking the plunge in Ridglea this summer for a Golf membership. I'm excited!

AF Doc, Thank you for the input. We are moving to central FW and will be looking at Ridglea, Colonial, and Rivercrest.
Maybe see you around. Thx.

Golf member at Ridglea and love it. They do provide a social membership with heavily discounted initiation and dues. I want to say the current social initiation is about $6k and dues on the order of $400/mo. If you need a sponsor let me know.

I just toured Colonial today before they shut down for tournament. They did vote to redo the course next year and apparently will be then renovating/redoing the club house. Pool area is pretty nice. One thing that I did find strange was that they didn't have an MGA.

With that being said I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a membership there. Anybody want to sponsor me?

No decision made yet on pending clubhouse renos and colonial but looks like most of the major work to be done after the course reopens in spring 2023.

Ridglea is on a waitlist now. Resident golf is $25k initiation and about $600/mo. Nongolf is $5k initiation and around $400/mo.

Grew up walking over to the Colonial pool on my parents social membership. Their new bar area was an awesome add on that my Dad and I went to every time I came home from college. Passes for the tournament that get you into the clubhouse and brand new pool and workout facilities are also a big plus.

I literally googled membership fees fort worth CCs and this thread came up. I live in Arlington Heights area, looking to move across camp bowie the first sign of the housing craziness subsiding, and the future mrs and I have been eying rivercrest. Apparently there's a junior membership option if you're younger than 35 that's way more reasonable.
