UT-Austin and UNM? You’re trying too hard, Ag.
We’re all obsessed. We wouldn’t be on the damned Internet yelling at/about each other all this completely unimportant stuff if we weren’t.
There wouldn’t be a 25-page thread there if we weren’t obsessed.
There wouldn’t be a 22-page thread here about that 25-page thread there if y’all weren’t obsessed.
If you are reading this, you are obsessed.

If you can't see the difference between this example and Seattle using our trademark, there is no purpose in even discussing this with you.
No one asked you to say **** to me, darlin’.
The “Texas Edition” thing was never presented as analogous to the “12th Man” situation. It was merely a hypothetical example of trademarks-gone-nuts.
A&M didn’t invent loud, passionate fans. A&M didn’t invent the idea that a loud, passionate crowd could provide an advantage. A&M didn’t invent the idea of a “12th Man”. A&M didn’t even say it first. A&M trademarked it. There’s a difference.
Seattle had strong fan interaction from the jump of their franchise. They didn’t sit silently reading newspapers until nationally famous* Texas A&M gave them a brainwave to maybe have the fans do some cheering.
A&M saw an opportunity to capitalize on the success of an NFL franchise going to the Super Bowl in 2006 and again in 2013. In the non-Super Bowl years things on the “12th Man” front are a hell of a lot quieter.
Also, A&M doesn’t want the nation to associate Seattle with “12th Man”. The problem is that “12th Man” was not a national sensation until Seattle got good. A&M had never elevated it (or themselves) past a regional flavor. That’s not just because A&M hasn’t won much of anything worth mentioning in the last 70 years, it’s because the NFL is a juggernaut compared to NCAA Football (and everything else in the world).
Seattle does the 12th Man concept very proud. Their fans are kick-ass and they’ve had tremendous on-field success. They are not devaluing the idea of 12th Man at all. Not only have they brought it to national attention, the people who are now aware of the 12th Man concept who were not before love it and think it’s awesome.
A&M has benefitted from Seattle’s use of “12th Man”, but still acts petulant and whiny in the public space for seemingly no reason at all.
