The OP fails to recognize that conference realignment has been discussed for over 50 years. An article appeared in a Texas sports magazine in the 60's predicting the realignment of Texas colleges and universities along with the other major conferences ( PAC 8, Big 10, Big 8, etc) . As I recall, the realignment was more along regional and geographical lines and financial reasons rather than for political/ academic reasons. Of course, dollars play more of a role in it today than in the 60's.
It should not be surprising to anyone who follows college football that this was going to occur sometime. The explosion in cable and satellite tv along with the dollars being poured into football by television and alumni had to line up to cause it to happen. Also the college bowl fraternity (Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange) had to lose some luster. That occurred with the demand from the fans, the media, and some coaches to have a NC football playoff. Texas A&M picked the right time to make its decision. Gig'em Aggies!
