Interesting thread. A father of a tceh student vehemently defends his son's "choice" of schooling.

I would say UNT is a better school, but not by much. UNT at least realizes it’s purpose is to attract the locals that are either in a professional career and want additional schooling, older adults that have no previous degree, or DFW kids that couldn’t get into UT / TAMU but were too smart to waste away in Lubbuttocks.

When will tceh learn it’s nothing more than a remote regional school in the desolate South Plains? It’s on nobody’s Top 10 in the State of Texas (in terms of choice schools) and it caters to rejects that couldn’t get into school anywhere else. The fact they pretend to be an emerging research institution is beyond laughable.

Advantage: UNT

They both suck.

Texas Tech is a regional university at the tuition price of a flagship school. The University of North Texas feels like a commuter school.

I've known quite a few people who transferred out of UNT and I myself transferred out of Tech.

You can compare each program at Tech and UNT vs. one another, but more than likely you can find the same program at another school in Texas that blows both of them out of water. UNT has a good music program I hear but so does Baylor. But Baylor costs a lot more.

UNT does have some programs normally only available at private schools, like real estate, but you can find equivalent programs, like real estate finance, at the other Texas public universities.

Are UNT or Tech your only choices? If so, why? I can understand you going to UNT if you live in the area and have to. It's not such a bad choice then.

Ouch.

LMAO @ this. I majored in business and had a 50k salary coming straight out of Tech in 2001. For my major, many of the same companies recruited Tech, A&M, UT and every other major school in the region. When I started work, I started with individuals from UT, A&M, OU, Baylor, and Oklahoma State. For us, it didn't matter at all that UT had the top business school (by far), as we all started with the same salary and benefits!

LMAO @ this too. I will actually be attending a top MBA program or a top Real Estate program this fall (as Real Estate is my passion). Schools that would love for me to choose them include Ivy League schools and all of the top graduate business schools in the state of Texas.

Top business schools care very little about which school you went to for undergraduate. GPA is important, but even that is just one factor.

Oh, btw, I had a 3.25 GPA at Tech. Flame away.

Riiiiiiiiight.

As a Texas resident without much to lose from this discussion (apply/admit to UT McCombs but attending OOS), I'll chime in.

The general order of things in Texas seems to be like this:

Rice
- considerable drop -
UT
- slight drop -
A&M
- considerable drop -
Baylor / TCU / SMU
- decent drop -
Tech

To my knowledge, Tech is definitely one of the 10 best schools in Texas.

Tech wasn't the school I thought I would end up at, but now that I'm here I wouldn't trade it for any other school out there. I was accepted to many of the schools that are listed above, including UT, which can't be said for everyone. I'm happy with where I'm at, but if you have a negative attitude towards a school before going there you will probably hate it. All the people I knew that were excited to go to Tech in the beginning of the year, ended up loving it. All the people that were still ****ed they got rejected by A&M or UT because they were barely out of the top 10%, ended up complaining all year long and finally transferring...thank god.

One other fact is that as a Tech grad (from a number of years ago) I attended graduate school with students from around the country and competed without problems. I have a great life financially and a good education, in the broadest sense. I have met and discussed my profession and 'culture' with people from around the world. I have met with Ambassadors and foreign ministers without fear.

Great to see that TexAgs isn't the only website you all run to in attempts to seek validation.

Thanks Doc. I'd like to think my threads are in part the reason why you average 12 posts a day on this site.

Angelo State University (no longer a regional college just for SA kids, it's a growing school. Lots of kids all over Texas going here now, and give it another ten to fifteen years it'll have an enrollment around 15,000, excellent physics program, plenty of people going to strong grad programs afterwards, comparable academics to Tech but in a nicer town, generally more respected by A&M grads than Tech)

That said, part of the reason I consider Angelo State to be a better school than Texas Tech is because there's a good portion of Angelo State students who got accepted into A&M or UT but could not afford it. On the other hand, the kids that go to Tech more than likely could also afford to go to A&M or even UT because there's not a huge price difference between those three schools. But there's not very many students at Tech who could have gotten into UT or A&M but chose Tech instead. I was one of them and I was in a very small minority. Tech has more programs than Angelo but those programs you can find at the graduate level of other schools. I can't think of very many programs at Tech that you can't get at UT or A&M.

I worked 30 hours a week for the corporation, much of that time I spent working on my side business and retired at the age of 28 (with no need to ever work again if I choose to do so). LMAO @ your idiotic statement that it's bad to work for a big corporation.

BTW, I started with some UT grads who had just been laid off by "small companies" and they all agreed that the work environment at this large company was much better.

I actually NEVER drank at Tech. I worked 40 FUN hours a week while at Tech (while getting paid well as a salaried employee for Tech with full benefits).

BTW, I have much stronger connections through my HS than one could dream of making by graduating from UT or A&M undergrad.

Lower third tier never disappoints! This fellow “retired” at Age 28 with his amazing $50,000 salary from Texas Tech. He also made the right “choice” because he had better networking through high school than he would have having been part of The Texas Exes or The Association of Former Students.

Also, his corporation only made him work 30 hours a week! I love The Internet and you tceh folk absolutely amuse me beyond belief. Sand flea bitterness is fun.
