No. 9 Aggies set records in a 112-26 drubbing of Northwestern State

Historic.

That’s one word to describe No.9 Texas A&M’s (9-0) emphatic 112-26 victory over Northwestern State on Monday night at Reed Arena.

To go along with the win, the Aggies’ 112 points mark a single-game record for points scored, surpassing 111 vs. Lamar on November 15, 1995. In addition, A&M’s 86-point margin of victory is the largest in program history.

The undefeated Aggies will now enter conference play with a perfect record for the first time in program history.

“A game like this helps everyone boost their confidence,” A&M guard Kay Kay Green said after the game. “Coach Blair has been stressing to us to let the game come to us, and to see our hard work pay off, it’s a great feeling.”

Sahara Jones said the Aggies didn’t find out about the record-setting performance until after the game.

“I think it was special we didn’t know during the game because we were able to keep our focus,” she said.

The Lady Demons were outmatched from the very beginning in all phases of the game. Texas A&M jumped out to a 29-11 lead after the first quarter, shooting 11 of 16 from the floor. Defensively, the Aggies’ press forced 10 turnovers in the first stanza as Northwestern State only made three field goals in the opening quarter.

As good as the Maroon & White was in the first quarter, it was nowhere close to the dominant second quarter from Texas A&M.

A&M outscored Northwestern State 35-2 in the second and went into halftime with a 64-13 lead. Texas A&M finished the frame on a 20-0 run as the Demons only bucket came with 4:22 left in the half. Alexis Morris capped off the half with a 3-pointer as time expired.

Coming out of the locker rooms, the onslaught continued in the second half.

Northwestern State, trying to slow down the Aggies, switched to a zone for most of the second half. However, Destiny Pitts found openings in the zone and made three-three pointers in the third quarter.

Pitts finished with a team-high 14 points, including four 3-point goals.

“Pitts can hurt a zone with her shooting ability,” Blair said after the game. “To have her come off the bench and make open shots, it makes everyone else’s job easier on the court.”

In total, Texas A&M made 12 of their 23 3-point attempts, tying a school record. The Ags shot 52 perfect from behind the arc.

“I thought we had a complete game,” head coach Gary Blair said after the game. “We wanted to make sure we brought the intensity we had in practice to the court during the game.”

After the 112-26 win, Coach Blair wasted no time talking about A&M’s next opponent: Tennessee.

“The Tennessee game is always won or lost on the boards,” Blair said. “Our kids are working hard, but Tennessee always brings a different level of physicality to the table.”

Coach Blair also had an important message for Texas A&M fans.

“Anytime an eight-time national champion comes to town, I want butts in seats,” Blair said. “I know it’s New Year’s Eve, but Aggie fans, y’all have a job to do December 31.”

The conference opener against Tennessee will tip-off at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 31. The game will be aired on ESPNU.
