Sorry if there's a thread on this, Amazon mandating a 5-day in-office "RTO" starting next year. A lot of backlash as is expected/imagined to this move.

I read this article today:
Amazon's RTO mandate is a massive failure of imagination - Fast Company
Quote:

Because forcing people back to their desks won't fix what's driving talent away. This policy is not just an ill-conceived quick fixit reveals a deeper leadership failure. Amazon's leadership, like many other companies, is clinging to old ways of thinking instead of evolving to meet the needs of today's workforce and the potential of new working models.
Am I missing the reading of the tea leaves that this is just a veiled attempt for employers to force attrition to higher %s so as to not pay severance and prune down the 'less engaged' of the bunch?

When jobs are plentiful the worker can call the shots. When they are not? Get back in the office. Pretty simple.

Dell just went 5 days in the office for sales. I imagine it won't be too much longer for everyone else. Complete 180 from a few years ago from the ELT.

Employees can just quiet quit. I'd drag it out.

jobs are always plentiful for the top talent, which I'd think companies like Amazon would want to keep/attract

Absolutely a lever Amazon is pulling to get people to quit instead of additional layoffs. Their next lever is likely having everyone "return to hub" which will force everyone to work out of one of their corporate headquarters.

Walmart did that in 2024.
Closed Dallas, Toronto etc and forced everyone incl remote emps to pick a place and move. Else they are out.
