Noticed the same thing in oil and gas when people retire. More notable in the field folks than office. Within a year or two, they pass. Makes me think FIRE is the way to go. 67 is way too long.

Maintaining a purpose in life is #1 key. I've seen it too many times and talked to too many people much older than me (as I seek advice from them) that there is no other explanation.Red Pear Realty said:

He said that he had recently retired from a 25 year career in the Air Force, and his very last task for the Air Force was to try and figure out why retired generals were dying off QUICKLY after retiring. He told us that what he found after surveying everyone was that the folks who retired and plopped down on the couch were all dead within 6 months. But the ones who retired and maintained a purpose for their lives (got a retirement job, picked up a full-time hobby, traveled full time) went on to live long and healthy lives. That lecture has really affected my sense of purpose for my life.

42 here, stay-at-home wife, 3 kids + 1 foster kid
Making pretty decent money, have quite a bit saved... But my retirement goal is probably 55-60. Wow, typing that, I can't believe I'm on the back half of my career.
Purpose in life is definitely key, but as indicated, that absolutely does not need to come in the form of a job or anything that resembles a job.

I reached my 'escape velocity' number last year and pulled the trigger retiring in my 40s last month. I can't imagine trying to pick up a part time job unless I really just had nothing else to do. So far I am keeping busy taking care of my house, family and my dog.
Even if I could get a part time job someplace paying $20 an hour or so for 20 hours a week, I don't think it would be worth giving up my time for an extra $400 a week

yea having even half a work week tied to a job which prob requires much more manual labor than your peak career for the extra ~$20K/yr doesn't sound appealing
think I'd rather grind another 2-3ish years full time to accumulate/compound enough extra to be able to up safe withdrawal rate by that amount indefinitely

Wife and I are on Obamacare with an HSA plan. Have 10x the max out of pocket already saved in HSA. All of our current doctors are in network and so are the closest three hospitals. $800 a month with no subsidies.
Exactly, I couldn't imagine applying for a job and having to do new hire tasks. I loved my retail job as a teenager, but every now and then I had to clean the toilets or unload the truck. No big deal when you are just cutting your teeth but my corporate job wasn't so bad that I would go back to doing that.

I've thought about it and have a few episodes mocked up actually. I follow a guy on YouTube that reminds me a lot of myself and mindset. Retire and Go. Look him up. I ran into him last July while I was in Bangkok. Super nice guy with an incredible story and outlook on life. Probably not a lot of people's cup of tea, but I like most his material and certainly appreciate his bravery to do what he is doing.
When I get out of tech I'll shift my focus more to flipping homes and cars. Still be able to make a little money and do something way less stressful and a lot more "hands on".

In hindsight I wish I would have spent some of my youth in carpentry, fixing cars, making furniture or something more tactile to do in semi retirement.
I can't explain why, but I sense after what I suspect many of us share in common, a career in the corporate world...something more tactile would not only be enjoyable but literally healthy.
I'm a big music fan. I can't make stuff for a living but driving around listening to music all day, delivering pizza sounds pretty good.

I think this is so true. I do not want to even think about the damage to my body from the stress from my jobs. Being on call 24/7, maybe 1-2 nights a week of decent rest. We are about to be in turnaround season. 14-16 hr days 7 days a week for 6 weeks. Then 3 week vacation to decompress.jamey said:Cliff.Booth said:

kids are the best. Life would be boring without them.
Our kids are the primary reason we've gotten our finances in order and started working towards being able to say "shove it" one day.
Although there's definitely some days that make you appreciate your time as a bachelor lol

I think the remark was made in jest. I don't know many people that regret having kids, but it's easy to do a quick self assessment of finances and know how expensive they are so plenty of tongue in cheek remarks to go around
I need more ideas for a bridge job into retirement. I'd like to retire but not yet ready. The way it's going I may not make it with my job or my career the next 5 years.

It's never too later to learn. Go take a class at your community college. Try some of it out before you get to actual retirement age so you have some goals to look forward to.jamey said:Cliff.Booth said:

Carpentry/welding is a big stress reliever for me - definitely works a different side of my brain that the office doesn't. Immensely satisfying.
I think some handyman work will be in my semi-retirement plan. Hopefully some cabinetry, too.

All these semi-retirement jobs sound fine provided you don't get a-hole clients.
You think these jobs sounding great... But imagine having a multimillion dollar portfolio where a 0.2% daily change in the market means you make or lose thousands of dollars.
Are you going to apply and show up for an interview, then spend 20-30 hours out of your week where you will make a few hundred a day when you could literally do anything else with your time?
Maybe I'll change my tune in a few months/years but just keeping my house up and spending more time with my family and dog are worth more to me than a few extra hundred a week

yea that's why I'm looking into finding more passive streams, portfolio overwriting, hands off real estate investing etc
