This article is dated and some poster on this thread started a company doing precisely that. We considered entering that space in west texas with WAHA being so brutal but ultimately decided against it.

It's not THAT old. And if you are a company with hundreds of your own wells, the economics look different.

West TX Nat Gas

This isn't about buying gas on the market. It's about not wasting flare gas, and instead using it to mine Bitcoin.

Bitcoin was around $54k to $55k most of the day and now shot up to $57k.

Yes I understand that. I hadn't heard the term WAHA to describe Nat gas. I'm out here in the middle of it in Midland and have been watching these types of stories with interest.

I'm a little annoyed that coinbase makes you hold your bitcoin on their exchange for a week before you can transfer it to a hardware wallet. Now I don't want to buy large amounts at once due to the risk of keeping it on coinbase for a week, but at the same time, the price of bitcoin could rapidly go up in a week.

None of the exchanges perform all things well. But some perform differently for different reasons. Lotta competition out there.

Is there risk in just keeping it in Coinbase instead of moving to wallet? What is the advantage of a wallet? I'm new to this.

Not really. People keep hundreds of millions of dollars on there.

What? You cannot wire transfer bitcoin. When I bought bitcoin it said I cannot send the bitcoin anywhere else for a week.

Does anyone use Blockfolio? Barstool has started advertising it so I was going to start using it. Up to this point, I've only bought bitcoin in order to deposit into online gambling accounts, but I'm going to start investing a little in bitcoin. I've only used coinbase previously.

An advantage of a wallet is that you own your private keys. It may or may not be more secure depending on the type of wallet. Hardware wallets = good security. Software wallets = as good or better security that your online banking app or website. So, if you're comfortable with online banking, you should probably be comfortable with wallets.

Another advantage is you can use your wallet to interact with different types of yield bearing sites/apps.

You wire transfer USD and you can transfer Btc immediately.

You can't send Bitcoin after a bank transfer because there's a settlement period. Coinbase would have no recourse if a party send Bitcoin off exchange and then disputes the settlement.

Oh ok. That makes sense. So a wallet is completely different than an exchange like Coinbase. Thank you.

Oh ok, well the other day I transferred USD to coinbase just to test it out and that was taken out of my bank in one business day, so maybe I will not have to wait the full week?

An important note is that in online banks your USD is FDIC insured, but bitcoin in an exhange, software wallet, or a hardware wallet is not FDIC insured. So I wouldn't feel more comfortable keeping bitcoin in a software wallet like I would with online banking.

I asked about that at the top of the page! From my understanding it will be tradable through Coinbase Pro, but not regular coinbase?

Nothing except Coinbase has far higher fees than pro.

Who actually uses Coinbase?

I'm not real sure. I've read that Pro is more "advanced" and doesn't have as high of take on trades. I'm just starting, so that is just my understanding.

Coinbase Pro. Low fees and high reliability. This is assuming you intend to report your ownership to the IRS, of course.
