Speaking of, how's your SMCI looking?
I haven't sold a share yet, so I'm still holding dead money with a ****ton of potential unrealized losses. So, I'm either Lt. Dan during the storm, or I'm Capt. Ahab chasing the white whale, currently being either one of those characters sucks for me.
After considering Melville's views on predestination, I believe that the whale found Ahab.

Let's hope that it is more Lt. Dan. Rooting for all of you on this. It will become a TexAgs legend either way.

So is the ZIM drop supposed to happen after the ex dividend date or the record date?
Are you referring to the price drop related to the payout of the dividend? Or as a result of profit-taking?

Either / both. I figured they might be fairly simultaneous.

Planning a buy of MSTZ. Currently $0.80 but could come down closer to $0.70. If MSTR engages another leg down, this could be a minimal risk and extremely high reward play to profit or hedge against a position aiming anywhere from $1.35 - $2 over the coming week or so.

MSTR -

That's why you buy a penny stock 2x inverse ETF. Controlled plan, clearly defined stop, clearly defined target. Will lay it out with both charts as I get closer to thinking the move is upon us. 1 hour left to see if anything else is happening today.

Interesting. I played it this way, yesterday:

Bought shares yesterday afternoon at $35.73 of MSTY (YieldMax high-dividend tracker for MSTR), along with protective puts ($9.78 for April $30s). At this point, both are up since purchase, improbably.

My theory is that I'll get a rapid payback/return of at least most of my capital (current yield is 68%!), while retaining some upside potential. This way, I get paid near-term for the mad volatility occurring. The protective puts are just in case the bottom drops out. I basically have used this approach with NVDY the past year, and it's worked out great (as everything associated with NVDA has, to be fair).

Feel free to comment on the strategy...

Any thoughts on MARA? I had a good few days with it and decided to hold through the wknd. They recently copied the mstr strategy but it isn't overbought like mstr is.

Don't see a problem with this. As long as you are protected from MSTR $200 which I see as unlikely but possible.

MARA is going the MSTR route. Leveraging dollars to buy BTC, but also mining BTC and they are one of the best at it. I could see the stock going much higher. But I can tell you for absolute fact, that BTC dips are going to affect MARA harder than they ever have. And if this bull run ends and we get another bear market, MARA will be bag holding and their stock price will reflect it.

Trade BTC miners. Don't own them.

My recent experience with a different stock that pays a large dividend was it closed at $38, paid a - $2 dividend, and when the market opened the next day the stock traded at $36. I thought that sucked. Soon after payment people started selling and haven't stopped.

Of course the value goes down when the dividend is paid. That's cash leaving the balance sheet. Is this really a question?

If tomorrow you're going to get $2, and then again in 3 months you'll get another $2 (and so on), the value of that stream of cash flows is basically $2+present value of those future quarterly cash flows. And the next day, that stream of cash flows is only worth the present value of future cash flows (which is uncertain and doesn't start for another three months). So what's the difference in valuation? The $2 payment.

There's no way it's always that simple. If everyone rushed to sell after the record date most everyone would lose out on the deal unless they decide to be long term holders and the price recovers in a reasonable timeframe.

I am curious how much the dividend is really affecting the price when the record date is reached. If it is already weighing it down, then trying to trade a stock like this buying before and selling after the record date is essentially a bet that you can get out of it before the price sinks below the purchase price minus the dividend received.

Either way it would seem like a large dividend makes trading something like this a high risk proposition, just wondering if I am missing something here or if sometimes these size dividend payouts also coincide with stock price increases.

Participants buy and hold equities based on having a dividend. They sell the same equities based on cutting a dividend. That dynamic on share supply and demand has more of an impact on stock price than dividend cash leaving balance sheet.

My current top plays:

PLTR $70 call options for January. This is a momentum play and magnet rally to $70/share.

NUE $200 call options by January 2026. This is a play on Trump tariffs against non-US steel producers in addition to the beginning of the uptick in this cycle.

WMT $100 call options for June 2025. The play here is the positive Walmart earnings (especially compared to Target) in addition to the stock having that magnet rally to $100. This option play is going to be my first culled once we hit. I think there is some negative exposure if trump enacts tariffs against China. But still a good Santa's rally candidate!
