Me too brother. Me too. I'm flat wearing out the IBKR and TOS apps though between meetings. My Apple Watch ran out of battery mid day which is a problem. May have to get a backup.

Keep in mind you get death by a thousand cuts too. Block a pipeline here, restrict drilling on Federal lands there, influence investors and financial institutions to avoid companies that don't talk green enough, crank up the EPA a bit, spew negative sentiment that adds uncertainty to long lead, capital intensive developments.

Futures enable producers to lock in prices of what they are edit:producing. The seller (short) of the future has an obligation to DELIVER x units of a commodity, the buyer (long) has the obligation to take delivery of the future.

By shorting, the guy locked in his price at X, all he has to do is mine enough nickel and deliver it to the buyer (assuming its a physically settled contract as opposed to cash) by the delivery date. There was a short squeeze on nickel futures so he got nuked.

This is what oil companies do as well. I bet a lot of them hedged a good chunk of their crude and are missing some upside now.

When commodities are going parabolic as they are now the futures curve will be in backwardation. I.e. near term contract is higher than further dated ones. In this scenario, the producer will short the front end of the curve and go long the back end.

But there is a limit to how high the front end contract can go before you get margin called. That's what happened here.

This happens all the time time with volatility hedgefunds too.

I don't own btc. Owning Mara is a "cheap" way for me to get exposure to the asset

OIH, LNG, GLD all down in pre-market trading and looked to Feb putting early reversal type candles yesterday. Market up this morning but major resistance overhead.

Watch out getting bit on trying to ride the oil rocket. That could be running out of steam too.

The ETF rallied beyond the appreciation of their underlying. (In commodities that makes your head go sideways..) If creations are stopped in this ETF, I wouldn't want to be the bag-holder when the music stops playing.

I was out yesterday, but I understand the CME increased margin requirements that led to liquidations in corn, wheat and other commodities contracts and had commodities down. Haven't researched this morning for accuracy.

BSG - thanks for the nickel article. There was a natural gas player in Oklahoma who performed a similar stunt last winter as I recall,...it's a hedge until it's not...LOL! (That's not a hedge) Once had a fellow tell me in the broiler & turkey biz, you're always short corn and soybean meal to feed the birds because the birds are always coming at you (it's your business, supplying birds to the consumer) so you have to get long corn and meal Futures for all the pre-birds. That worked until the Futures dipped and the margins ate their lunch...and their business. Lot's of folks can justify their positions, but it doesn't mean it's an orthodox hedge. I learned a lot from guys with pencils so sharp you couldn't see the lines.

Back on Teucrium, I'm looking at their CORN and will consider a position with them later. More research is needed. Corn will be a bigger story than wheat.
