Japanese Buying Comes In at 1.30 to Support Bonds For Now....But
The employment report was strong and did not disappoint those, like us, who were looking for stronger numbers... Of the three scenarios we mentioned. Scenario 2 was the one that came into play... As we said, that would keep 10 years in a 1.22-1.30 range for the day... So far that is exactly what has happened... 10 years got to 1.2986, when we saw some Japanese buying came in to stabilize markets... The Japanese market is closed Monday so the Japanese next opportunity to buy after today is London time Monday.
The employment number results is one of two that Powell wants to see before he put forth tapering at the September meeting... We think this number was strong enough for Powell to tweak his Jackson Hole speech in two weeks... We listened to Rieder and El-Arian discuss the markets with Fero of Bloomberg...El-arian thinks the Fed has to stop buying securities now... Rieder sees the tapering starting sooner rather than later...but one thing that stuck with us with what Reider said was that tapering would be a very good thing for the stock market... He feels after a blip, equities will recognize this as a positive trend in the economy and the fact that the Fed sees it that way... There was more out of that interview but we taped it to review later.
Even though we think that the range is done for the day, we think the longs will have some serious thinking to do next week with supply... 10 year futures are right on the cusp of 134 and 5 years are above .75, but still below .78...Bear Steepening is the name of the game, and while it may be over for today, we think next week brings turmoil to markets....
