That's a good question. How did the loss happen? I guess I could see this happening to him

• Purchase 2000 GOOG at $1515 on 2/18/20.
• Sell his 2000 GOOG shares for $1115 around 3/16.
• Repurchase at $1200 on 4/7 and still have those shares.

That would do it. In that case the IRS is going to say you didn't really take a $400/share loss.

Edit: I guess then the tax bill comes from gains he took in shares purchased in mid-March that he's sold whereas he's till holding his 4/7 GOOG purchase.

The only thing with this scenario is I think the article said the guy made $60k a year and he opened his account in 2020 with only $30k.

Also, if he still had the shares at the end of the year, it wouldn't have been a recognized gain so he wouldn't owe taxes on them at this point anyway.

Given he only had $45k profit and a $30k account to begin with, the only feasible explanation is the $800,000 is an error. It doesn't matter if they made $45M worth of trades somehow. Even that doesn't seem very feasible. There are around 250 trading days in a year. Even if he traded his entire account balance every single day, that's only $13.75M using an average balance of $55k. So he'd have to be buying and selling his entire account every single day multiple times in order to get to $45M.
