If you are looking at the actual VIX ($VIX.X on TD Ameritrade), then the reason is b/c options on the VIX are only actionable at settlement; there is no underlying asset with which you can "put" to someone or "call" away from someone.

Volatility in the broader market is inherently short lived (or, perceived to be so), thus, even if you anticipate a spike in volatility in the next month or two, buying options on the actual VIX four months out is not a smart idea b/c it is unlikely to react accordingly bc the market will price in that the volatility is likely to have ended by the time the four month option reaches settlement.


ETF's that attempt to track volatility, on the other hand, do have shares that can be "put" to or "called" away from someone. These ETF's typically trade in VIX futures and act similar to commodity tracking ETFs. Thus, for these ETFs, there should always be a time premium for a longer dated option since it is possible to initiate actionable transactions with shares of the underlying up to and including expiration.

Outside of the two small fear blips in the middle, the VOLSPD has been on an upward rise all morning. That indicates the volume into the S&P advancers is outweighing the volume into the decliners. Buyers are still present this morning.

300 is clear line in the sand. Break that and it's timbaaaaa. Needs to get back and stay over 305 at least, ideally 308+ for any chance of reversal. 300-305 is no man's land and becomes bearish flagging on intraday charts.

Yea let's see what happens... I'm neutral now. 21 day EMA is just a hair under 305. One method I like to follow is a close under 8 & 21 EMA means directionally bearish and close over both is directionally bullish. Ride the momentum until it stops. Of course it is common to close right on them though.
