That's funny - I just heard CNBC state that margin debt as a percentage of portfolios is at about the same ratio that it's been since 2018. More, in absolute terms, due to market appreciation, but nothing out of line at all. The CNBC guy was actually calling out the WSJ for the sensationalist story (!).

By the way, I personally don't utilize margin debt, and I agree with Prog that it's basically equivalent to obtaining a marker when gambling.

Ended up taking a sizable position in DKNG mid day when it was holding 49.90 but then it dipped to 48.90 at days end which made me take up a sizable "squeeze ags" butthole position. Dangerously close to the 50 day MA but I guess we'll see.

Anyone still holding the PENN 12/31 90c? I went net free on mine a few weeks back and am still holding on to the other half. It took a beating today and with only 3 DTE the future isn't bright.

Same statement/question for the NIO 12/31 45c

Net free is great, but not cashing in on these even more a few weeks back has stung.

Great point. WSJ had an article on it today as well. Interviewed a woman on margin buying 75% of everything in Tesla stock stating "this is how rich people do it". Another guy sold his home just to buy Tesla shares and is all in on them.

it's not for everyone... I'm at just 6 stocks in one account and only a handful in another account. I can do a lot more with less (just my preference at the moment as I grow the accounts). Whilst we're on the topic of margin, I just checked my fidelity brokerage and my margin buying power is >5x my cash position and almost 1.3x my total account balance. Is that normal? I've never had an itch to expose myself over 100% but suppose I would if we had a capitulation buying opportunity ala December 24, 2018.

Yeah he has 672 or something like that last I heard. I can rationalize (although flawed I am sure) having a ton of net free holdings with alerts set so my blood pressure isn't through the roof.

I have given a lot of though through these holidays and the past weeks about my strategy going forward with all I have gleaned from the group here, reflecting on past performance, time committed, etc. I believe I have landed on focusing my efforts towards fewer targeted share plays with the intention of net free solely then onto the next. Whether that is net free at half, more than half or a fraction thereof of my shares. I will then use covered calls $ on 50% of shares to add to my options plays or buy more shares and repeat in the same security.

Sometimes I feel like I am chasing the wind and I am pretty sure Solomon warned about that. I have realized I cannot play in all sandboxes at the same time nor do I think that is wise for me. Though it would be today but I am waiting for my next round of funding to my trading account to arrive then game on.

I think one of the most important things a person on this thread can do is identify what is their style, passion, enjoy, good at, is profitable for their understanding/skillset, etc. and apply that over and over until they can/want to expand. There are so many great ideas, tips, leads, etc. shared on this thread any given day that a new person to the 'sport' can easily get sucked into too many and loose their shorts. FOMO can be a seductive beast on this thread.

That "buying power" ratio sounds about right concerning your knowledge of the market, that comes across as very good.

I do utilize a large chunk of margin on trades that I see as happening quickly, but I don't ride trades down. I don't recommend it to anyone that isn't intricately familiar with the pros and cons and being able to watch those trades because I've seen many a person blow up their accounts with margin. If anyone does venture into that realm, never ride a trade down with margin.

I actually called fidelity a few months ago to take off margin trading (while keeping option ability) as I didn't want to even accidentally go down that path

On the topics of portfolios, my non-taxable is only has 6-8 positions in it but my taxable has ballooned towards the size of 30k and it does make it a bit overwhelming some days

I think I'm going to try and trim a bit but I'm also at like 25% cash so somewhat itching to get that in the market while trying to be disciplined. Feel like I'm pulling myself different directions at the moment

Im not sure if this is good or bad but I adopted the premise if it's good for one account it's good for the other in terms of the decision to buy into the shares or not. My taxable and tax deferred pretty much have the same holdings (maybe not quantity though). The only difference is I may have a couple more positions in the tax deferred that I've held longer. The vast majority of options 'trades' have all been in my taxable account. I do sell covered calls in the tax deferred to reduce my cost basis with the new goal of net free.

I have a SPAC question for you experts:

IPOC is a SPAC with a current market cap of $1.77 billion and trading at $17/share. It's acquiring Clover Health in early January and if the vote passes, Clover's market cap is reported at $4 billion (2.26x that of IPOC). By that math, we should assume a future pps of $38 for IPOC (2.26 x $17). Is my math and logic flawed? Thanks.

I have a SPAC question for you experts:

definitely not flawed logic. A lot of what I'm reading is many are targeting 30+. I'll probably go net free in the low 20's and ride the rest into the sunset (play cc's on them for eternity).
