Hell yes. It's the #1 problem in the business right now.

Anyone have sons or friends sons that are looking at getting on with a driller? I know a company looking for hands in Devine, Tx. Old school rigs. Throwing chains and tongs type work. Let me know I can put them in contact.

Do they need experience?

I have a nephew about to graduate HS and was going into the marines and had to back out unexpectedly. Now looking for some good manual labor type work

I don't believe so. Looking for bodies that are willing to work and learn.

As most should know on this thread specifically, this work isn't for the weak. But people willing to work can learn a great deal and it is a good spring board to get on with a major drill co.

No...we're all in Houston for OTC.

EDIT: I live in Houston, so that's not surprising.

How is OTC this year? I didn't get invites to the usual parties or offered a free pass like in past years so I know my usual vendors have cut back on spending. I was able to snag a free pass code from a friend but didn't know if it was worth taking a day off of work to go wander around and collect pens and stress balls.

Was just commenting about this to other coworkers. Usually the engineers are the last to get invited, if at all, so its not out of the ordinary for us to get forgotten about, but we were all surprised that we didn't really hear anything. No announcement emails from vendors to come visit booths, no internal promos to come visit the company booth. We didn't even realize it was going on until after it started.

The only reason I know OTC is going on is because of one vendor spamming my LinkedIn messaging about visiting a random booth.

This thread is the first I heard about OTC this year. Pre-Covid, I would gets lots of pass offers and emails to visit booths.

I recently changed product lines and roles (but kept the same email address) so I understood if I was no longer on the invite list but then all of my former colleagues at my old product line didn't get invites either. One vendor kept sending the same auto generated spam email to visit them at their booth. I sure as hell am not dropping $300 of my or company money to go to your booth. I get engineers are an odd bunch to hang with, but we like beer too dang it!

If you're interested. 3 part series on the power of big oil. It focuses primarily on ExxonMobil. It's very one sided

Part 1: climate denial
Part 2: doubt
Part 3: delay

Same. But I remember it being really expensive and a person I talked to yesterday said it was much smaller and only inside NRG Center.

No thanks. I'm sure it would just piss me off. The average American has no idea how well they live because of petroleum. I know most here understand this frustration. A good documentary I recommend is spOILed. Not sure if you can stream it, but it is much more fair and does a good job illustrating how good we as American's have it because of oil.

Saw a Facebook post about someone trying to buy groceries for a week without plastics. Basically impossible.

Why? I always thought otc was overrated. Several smaller, cheaper, and more easily accessible shows that are better, imo.

Mainly because I find the technology throughout O&G very interesting. Also, because I heard it was fun, and there was some good networking with alcohol stories.

There is good networking because people are in town but the show is a shell of it's former self. I'd guess it's about 25% the size it was 5 years ago and nobody but the Chinese bring any equipment any more. It's not worth the money this year.

After about 7-8 years out of the O&G world i was picked up for a very specialized role with a midstream company on a training contract to make sure everything is a fit. About 40% of the trainees dont make it. So far I am enjoying the work and the much better schedule and looking forward to being back in this industry. Very excited.

Spoke to someone today that was there and said it was a shell of what it used to be. No equipment outside, and only inside one building like someone mentioned above. Think it has anything to do with the fact they just had it in August of last year? Or is the market moving away from large events. Now that I'm out west I went to Tulare World AG expo this year and it was massive, like I remember OTC being in the past. So it's not all tradeshows taking a step back.

Seems smaller events are getting better and better. I'm on the road and blanking on the name of the event, but the Daniel energy partners event at Minute Maid this year was better than any otc I've been to, imo at least. Way more focused and less crap to filter through.
