They work, officially, 12 hours a day so they are actually working more in terms of total hours than a typical 40 hour work week. Add in to that that rarely is a shift actually 12 hours, and you can't go home at the end of the day (depending on the operator, but most company men live on site or near site), and it seems like they work a lot more than what their "schedule" conveys.

Travel is also typically on "your time"...although that's not necessarily unique to rotators.

Being in the middle of nowhere working on Christmas sucks.

Agreed. Its so easy to point to these "easy" schedules when you're not in the crow's nest with below zero temps and high winds. The work field guys do is no joke.

It's a 2-way street. I started on the field side and worked my way up to having my "name on the door". I put in far fewer work hours, but carry a lot more responsibility and liability. I wouldn't be disappointed if I woke up tomorrow 7 years back in time pumping a long string. I'd say it's all equally rewarding from a happiness standpoint, but maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I know lots of people who rotate 28/28 to the middle of nowhere west Africa. They do get a 60-80% uplift.

Plus your travel days are on you, so it's actually more like 32/24. Plus 2 weeks of training per year.

Another thing not mentioned:

Sometimes rotations get extended. I was supposed to be on a 30/30 last year that turned into a 185/35.

Honestly, I think Australia is one of the worst rotational assignment for Americans...especially something like Barrow island because of the extra 2 days travel (round trip). Relatively low uplift and a lot of travel time. Nigeria is a good rotation because of high uplifts and direct flights from Houston and Atlanta. Depending on who you work for and where you live, Angola can also be a good rotation.

We are way off topic. I think the comment about schedule was originally just acknowledgement that field hands are expensive and obviously have to be cut pretty quick if they cannot be put to work.

Jesus Christ. Going to have to defend myself here.

I've been on rigs only for HSE check ups outside Calgary and Houston. My point was the cost associated with paying floor men. $100k compared to college graduates is a steep bill -reason why folks get stacked so quickly in a downturn. I know the shifts are long and I know most miss their families. It's also dangerous work. It isn't easy.

Didn't mean to insinuate a rotational schedule is not equaling half a years work. That's not what the point was.

Well, when we can find some college grads who want to spend their time working in mud on the ground, in rain/snow/heat, eat a sandwhich covered with pipe dope because there are no lunch breaks when tripping pipe, sleep in a room for 2 weeks with other workers who are dirty, and be away from home whenever point them out. The industry is waiting! Just send some chicken wire to cover the rig to keep the birds from eating all the worms.

Watching y'all make heads or tails of an oilfield rotation is humorous. I worked the last 12 years on rotation. It rain, snow, heat, mud, in places most people will never see. The last 5 years I've been an independent contractor working for the highest bidder. The last three I've billed for $350K per year. I've also worked jobs where I only sleep 3 hours a day. But I've been making six figures since I was 19. I think the perception of the field workers and sense of entitlement on this thread sometimes is hilarious. What you corporate type don't understand about the field guys is they work hard. And live in places where the cost of living is low. My daughter is one. And if oil doesn't rebound until she is six I won't have to work a day until then. I don't enjoy being laid off. But just because you're in the glass tower doesn't mean your above it. And it most def doesn't mean your time is more valuable. Because when I'm working 14/14 off, I'm getting paid $40 an hour every hour I stay breathing. It's not ideal for some. But the time I get with my family is 100% theirs, and when I get laid off I'm not worried about the bills.

What would drive a spike up?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but cashflow needs, reduced service costs and higher $/bbl will have operators addressing the DUC backlog. The way I see it, there will be a $/bbl ceiling and we have dips as supply comes online from completions.

Just my opinion, really, just like everyone else. But, the general story since the beginning of the year has been the price would be down in the first quarter, start to recover in the second and settle around 70 by the end of the year. Of course you have those out-liers predicting a total collapse and those predicting 200 oil but I believe a steady climb. Take it for what its worth.
