I check on this thread probably 3x a day to see what else has been said by those who know more about the industry than me.

Not to derail, but a few pages back I asked about possibly accepting a new job with a fracking company. The offer ended up being alright but it was really the uncertainty of the industry that made me decline it. The good new was that my company matched the offer and actually gave me a promotion along with it.

Had an interesting conversation with one of our lead CHESM folks yesterday. He was pretty doom and gloom about where the sector is headed. Basically said it's already getting ugly for some of the contractors, and only going to get worse.

He made reference to some big moves coming at BP as well.

Surprising you would wish for somebody to lose their job at all given the original intent of this thread.

But, being in the HES dept myself & acknowledging that we're predominantly overhead, I agree that a lot of the nonsense HES stuff should be eliminated.

Is anybody's company looking into or accelerating lean/ 6-sigma projects?

Never seem that one before. But it's interesting that a group that apparently is there to give you some ammo to push your company not to cut corners so you go home safe and in one piece is a parasite.

Winky face aside, this is part of the old school mentality that led to our industry being so reviled IMO.

On my desk right now is a HSE " safety procedure" produced by those fine professionals on the safe use and operation of........
A GD friggin OFFICE CHAIR .... Complete with such bullet points as :
-don't attempt to pick up the chair while still seated.
-do not roll a wheeled chair on uneven surfaces such as stairs...........
We have an entire staff of such useless clowns seriously churning out this tripe....

I wish I could say the same. I work in a lean role in my company and am not seeing the response I'd expect from the asset director I work for.

personal safety and process safety, while both are important, are two different worlds. lumping both into one complaint about "HSE" is extremely misleading.

i don't disagree that procedures like that are garbage, however. but stuff like that comes out of all disciplines.

Neither it's our own idiots BUT no doubt it will be sent to both Shell and BP for brownie points!
Speaking of those guys..... I just had a ( one of those guys) customer safety audit in one of my fab shops. It was the typical little 20something quota filler lil girl prolly with an English degree from Sam as the " auditor" ... She got all worked up and started writing stop work crap cause of those " bright harsh flash things that are open flames and obvious fire hazards " being used without a " firewatch and Fire suppression systems " in place........ We were mig welding , exactly as folks have welded for a hundred years in every factory, in every country , every day everywhere on the face of the planet...., She just couldn't understand the difference tween an ARC and an open flame!
I'm so damn ready to hang it up and leave this insanity to you guys!!!

i don't know your situation, but i'd be surprised if you do hot work without any sort of fire protection around. i think that's a pretty standard practice.

I worked at woodcreek for a few years. They have ergonomic people come by and help you set up your workspace.

sts, we have some fire extinguishers hanging around the building just like everybody does BUT This lil darlin thought we should have some drone standing next to the welder as a " firewatch" holding an extinguisher while we were welding. She just didn't understand the difference between someone doing a job with an open flame on the deck of a rig or in the middle of a refinery and common ordinary welding in a damn fab shop.

In a fab shop...not process area. probably clean fresh pipe...

Not in O&G, but our Office Manager/HR/Safety/Pain in the ass lady sent me an email after I left my office in Florida stating that my boots were not safe because they had leather soles with only rubber on the heels which could cause me to slip while on the hard surfaces/tile in the office.


I responded with: You better put carpet in the office before I come back then.

I Bcc'd my boss on it and he laughed his ass off.

i agree - she probably doesn't understand the concept of welding in a safe area vs. in/near a process area.

Oh well .. There goes thread... But there ain't much left to say other than watch the price of crude so might as well enjoy the HSE geek stories!!!! It's great ( gallows) humor !

Back on track here...

I'm in the Permian and things are definitely changing, but not panic mode yet: I'm seeing RV parks clearing out but not empty. The pace of folks leaving has picked up fast since October.

EHS story:

Had a third party safety contractor write me up for the tires on my truck . Said they were "hitting the wear bars" and should be replaced or I wasn't allowed back on site. I was the PM, it was my personal truck, and the tires were only 6 months old.

Same third party, different employee, told me I couldn't have a cup of coffee on the site because it was summer time, and coffee or other hot beverages could lead to heat stress issues. Again, I was the PM, and was just stopping by to see the Supt.

Fun times.

Oh, one more... I was walking in a cow pasture looking at the ROW for a new construction pipeline project. We had to wear steel toes, hardhats, safety glasses, full FRC, and have gloves and hearing protection. This was a pasture, no existing lines, no facilities, nothing. Construction was still 6-8 months out.
