I officed out of that facility and this is the first I'm hearing of layoffs in the news. Could be old news or additional layoffs due to the closing. I'm thinking it may be all the maintenance, janitorial, security, shipping/ receiving? Haven't heard either way yet.

Yeah that's what I'm guessing as well. Nothing materially new, just fall out from previously announced closures.

Interesting time for North American based services. A lot of product lines where I'm at are hiring at a decent pace right now. We'll see how long this uptick lasts.

After 10 months on the sidelines, starting next Monday, I'm back in the game. Took a cut, but it's better than what I wasn't making.

Hadnt seen a lot of responses from the BP(bp) crowd but I know today is the last day for a lot of folks. Good luck to you all if that happens to be you.

Hearing folks at Shell find out this week if their jobs are impacted by the reorg they're doing.

Also heard another round of packages for US folks.

Praying for any folks impacted that things sort out.

Heard the CFO of SWN unexpectedly passed away yesterday. Heart attack while swimming. Only 59.
the_batman26: I guess yall need this, its something to take pride in. At least the Feds trusted us with the Space Center; and I seem to recall the Feds not having the best time in Dallas.

it sounds like Exxon is moving a ton of its Permian support staff, including land administration and division order over seas to Bangladesh. they are going to have a call center of sorts.

Is this common for positions other than IT?

6-8k globally so hard to tell for Houston specifically. But I do think the upstream group will see a big cut

Becoming more common for customer service, HR and other functions that you can automate a lot of

We've done this to some extent at my large company with some success but we've generally accepted the limitations of it. They're like computers in that they're very good at repeatable tasks but the second you throw them a curveball, they don't know what to do, and they may not even tell you they don't know, they'll just sit on it. No free thinking/creativity allowed. Not that they're not capable of it, I assume it's a combination of the contract, training, and expectation.

Land slows down operations when they are on the same floor. Can't imagine when they are on the other side of the world, 12 hour time difference and likely have very strong accents and different culture.

Although, land never seems to do much anyway so not sure how big of a difference it will make.

Amen brother. I was laid off for 4 months and finally found a job after countless interviews. I took a pay cut, but still a good gig and way better than what I was making on unemployment.

There used to be a saying among public E&Ps of "An acquisition covers a multitude of sins." Since the market is no longer keen on acquisitions, publics are using re-orgs to obfuscate results.

My company does this with IT out of Bogota. Like anything it takes time to get used to and learn the workarounds. It makes it simple for a call center to handle 90% of the problems that are simple. The other 10% are punted to local personnel, which are now just fewer in number. The workaround is to learn who you local personnel are and they can quickly take care of any issues you have that the call center isn't responding to fast enough.
