Hey folks. 2011 here. Getting ready to relocate soon from Houston. I'm interviewing for a few pipeline engineering jobs but haven't found the right fit just yet. Anyone know of anything open at the moment they could point me in the right direction for?

Also, best areas to live for starting off with a rental house then transitioning to a purchase the following year? Married with a kid probably coming in the near future so not looking for any recently graduated crazy areas so to speak. Thanks for the help amigos.

Area to live will 100% depend on where you and your spouse work. Wait until you know that. Plenty of good spots but you don't want hour commutes each way

Yeah, lots of variables at play. We live in the Corey Merrill neighborhood. We like it, but probably moving in the next 2 years. Want something with more land and closer to the mountains so thinking Golden or Morrison area. We don't have kids yet but our neighbors claim our neighborhood public schools are good.

Work commutes can suck but seems more and more employers are allowing flexible working hours. I leave the office at 3 each day and work a few hours from home each evening. So my commute is roughly 15-20 min each way.

I was recently extended an offer for an internship in centennial colorado. I was curious if anybody knew of a reasonably priced place to stay in or around that area. Or if anybody lives around the area and is renting out a bedroom.

What part of Centennial are you needing to be around?

How long is the internship?
arobinette1280

The internship would most likely run from June 1st- August 14th
The company is centrally located but im not looking to be super close I am okay with having a longer commute.

there are loads of nice places to live In and around centennial.. just pick a place in your budget. Parker, lone tree, highlands ranch, centennial, south aurora, castle rock.. all within 15-20 drive.

Centennial is massive.

Why are you choosing centennial as a whole? Or am I misunderstanding and your job is central centennial?

I think he's just saying that's where the internship is. He said he was open to surrounding areas.

Do you guys carry emergency kits in the car during the winter? If so, what does it consist of?

I do. I keep most of this in year round and then add to it in the winter. I drive on 70 in the mountains all the time so I try to be prepped for a shutdown in addition to car issues.

I have basic tools, a leatherman, flashlight, first aid kit, collapsible shovel, traction device, ice scraper / snow brush and stuff like that. If I'm going any distance I make sure we all have some snacks, water, winter coats, gloves, hat and stuff including winter boots. Pretty much what I'd need to change a tire or something in a storm and not freeze or ruin my clothes.

Got 14 inches in Greeley. 2 hours of snowblowing mine and the neighbors drives is a solid workout.

Wife got out just in time on a flight last night at 8pm with one of our kids.

I'm supposed to fly out tomorrow at 6 with the other.. we'll see how that turns out. Tomorrow is gonna be a chit show with all the cancelled stuff today.

Solid 8-9" in parker so far, and coming down thick.

14-16" so far, just finished up with two hours of shoveling. Coming down harder now.

Facing east ftw.. sun melts my front and backyard!

I got to skip this shoveling, we fly out today so I had no motivation to shovel all that. 12" of snow in my driveway is about 60cy.

Yes, ours faces west and I had considerably more ice on the driveway than my neighbors across the street had. It was sure cold at -1 this morning.

Question about side walks - had mine completely cleared right at the end of the Tuesday snow. Then the wind happened yesterday along with some snow melt that drains right over the sidewalk which refroze this morning. It makes the sidewalk an ice rink but I hear putting "snow melt" down will eat up the concrete pretty bad.

Any suggestions?

You are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

EVERYONE has screwed up concrete around their house. You will notice people getting new drive ways and sidewalks a lot.

Snow melt is the way to go. I doubt you are going to have someone heat trace your driveway and sidewalks....

We literally just discussed having our entry way sidewalk and driveway re done yesterday.

I hope all is well up there in the Mile High City. I just stopped by for the memories.

Last night at dinner in Bondi (Sydney, Australia), a couple of my work colleagues were reminiscing about a Sales Kickoff trip they took to Denver a few years ago when they worked for a different company.

The conversation turned to Diamond, Shotguns, and some sketchy place they described as "across the train tracks" (I'm not sure about that one). Anyway, ahhh man, those were the days. As rampant misogyny was in its death throes in the IT industry, our STK rep (from Louisville) did break out the credit card for us at Shottie's - circa January 2002 (actually, it was the night of Tom Brady's "tuck rule" that should have been an INT). I knew that was the last time that was ever going to happen.

So we've been here for 6 months now and so far I'm having trouble understanding why people would want to move back to Texas.

I guess the thing I've missed the most is HEB.

I miss the BBQ and the food in general, friends and family, but nothing else.

We've found a few good places but largely the food here doesn't compare to Dallas.

Yes, we very rarely go out to eat. Food here is quite a bit more expensive and not as good. Other things more than make up for that and it's made me get better at cooking.

where are you eating? I work just outside of downtown and frequently eat lunch in highlands, Sunnyside, Berkeley area and I've never had a bad meal.

Mostly Stapleton area. Wouldn't say they've been bad meals, just don't seem comparable for the price compared to Houston.

IMO the Mexican food here is pretty impressive. Mostly better than I remember back in BCS.

Where's it at?

I think our top restaurants we've had are probably:
Mercantile dinning & provisions
Linger
Sushi Den

When I was traveling there a lot my go to's were:

Cherry cricket
Denver biscuit co
Ale house
Mercantile
Osteria Marco? I think this is the one my wife and I liked
Linger (when the wife joined me)
Little man ice cream

We also did a downtown food tour. I'd recommend

Know I'm missing some, been a few years

Is it normal that flights from Denver in February and March to Florida go for $600-700 instead of $250-300? I get spring break and all, but we were trying to visit family then and getting sticker shock.

I don't remember many good Mexican places in CS. Have found some decent Mexican here but you can't go in expecting Tex mex.
