We found an easy way to do it.. well 6 years ago now.

We sold our Houston house, and we moved here! But don't go telling everyone my secret

Did you have a job lined up before moving there ?

Nope. Neither one of us.

We saved vigorously in the 8-12 months leading up to when we wanted to move, so we had enough to live a while and still have savings left.

We both found jobs within 6-8 weeks. Got a 12 month apt. lease and put money down on a new house about 4 months into the lease.

Did you have kids? I've been wishing I had the guts that you had to do that for years now. I have young kids but I finally reached the point in my career where I have a very meaningful options that will be vested in the next three years. I've already decided I can stick it out and my company is not sold in three years I don't care I can make the move and just wait for the money. It's not too crowded already is it?

No, once we started seriously thinking about the move, we decided to delay kids to not complicate it. We were 31 so we told ourselves we can't wait much longer cause we want to be settled in before kids.

So by 32, we made the move. House came 1 year later, then kids came 2 and 3 years later. We both had very stable jobs and were back up to our TX pay already by kid 1. Housing has really blown up since we moved. Our house has appreciated 40% in 5 years. Apparently, the avg pay to cost of living ratio is very good though.

Kids obviously make this a bigger challenge, but honestly, if you're financially able to go a few months without work, it's the same scenario really. Do it in summer and enjoy the time off to explore the state with your kids. The market here is very healthy in many sectors now. I was in O&G, but laid off in 2015, and now I'm in commercial construction, which has a really good outlook for a least 5-10 years. Tech is huge, financial (schwab opened a huge campus in lone tree a few years ago)

Does anyone work for or have connections at Molson Coors?

I applied for a position there this week, I'd like to chat about culture, etc.

This is a sock, so no PM. My email is this user name at gmail dot com

I'm hopefully making a move out of Montana in the near future and really debating Denver vs. Salt Lake City. I'm 34 years old, no kids, not married, and only driving for Uber right now. I am also on unemployment since I lost my full time position at a sugar beet refinery here 2 months ago. It seems like SLC has the better outdoor access for hunting, fishing, and other fun stuff, along with not quite as expensive to live there. I have also had 2 job interviews there so far, but have applied there more lately than Denver.

I served in the Army before college and know at least 2 or 3 guys in Denver I served with. Still near the mountains although not surrounded or as close as SLC is. I like to hunt and fish and hopefully getting another truck once I get settled in at either city. Denver has like 300? craft breweries and an overall cooler city vibe, but SLC isn't bad there either. It looks like you can still get a one bedroom apartment in the Denver area for under a grand, so not prohibitively pricey.

Agribusiness degree from 2010 and my last job was a logistics/admin role. Good with SAP and Excel, also worked in accounting before the sugar factory. SLC vs. Denver seems like the best vs. the best matchup... my parents want to go on a trip to one or the other next week and look at places to live (ETA: help me find a place, they are staying put in Wyoming).

Oh yeah, people are saying SLC gets the nasty smog inversions in winter more than Denver does. Crap I need help deciding which of the 2 cities is the One! Thanks!

Can't really help as I've never been to SLC.

We love Denver. I'd suggest looking at the northern reaches of the Denver metro area - there's a lot of agribusiness North and East of town.

You can be in Summit County, just as a reference point, in under an hour (with good weather and traffic) from Denver.

Professional baseball, basketball, football, soccer, etc. I don't know about the inversion differences. It's been more noticeable here this year but that has a lot to do with smoke from wildfires Ij've been told.

My wife and I met in Colorado. She lived there a total of 10 years and I was there 5 years. I'm from Texas but grew up vacationing in Colorado, so I knew what I was getting into when I moved up there.

It was a great experience, but there is something about living in Texas that is more fulfilling. We still vacation up there, and Colorado will always be there, but it lost its luster after several years. We have enjoyed living in Houston more than we thought we would. Colorado is incredibly unchurched, which is one of the reasons we felt it was time to move back to Texas. That may or may not be important to everyone.

I can tell you that although property is expensive, property taxes and insurance are fractions of what they cost in Texas. And you don't have massive electric bills in the summer - - my home up there didn't even have air conditioning.

Good luck with your decision . . .

I'd disagree about the unchurched portion to an extent. There is a strong, vibrant Catholic community here.

In unchurched a word? Does not knowing that indicate I am unchurched?

and Mormons. I works for Large O&G service company and nearly every guy there was Mormon.

I will say, in our town anyway, while there are lots of churches, I don't see many catholic ones. In fact, We have a Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Presbyterian, episcopal, 'bible church', 'community church' a Christian church....

Pretty much just 1 of every kind.

I just got back today from Colorado. I signed a lease yesterday in Arvada, not far from the Old Town area and the light rail station there. Definitely excited to start a new life down there in the Denver area. I ended up finding a good 1 bedroom apartment for $1050, wanted to pay a little less but most of the cheaper ones had more issues.

I did more research and SLC has worse pollution for sure. I have sleep apnea that I believe I got from my Iraq deployment so I chose Denver. The area has been a dream of mine for almost 10 years now and it's finally coming true!

Congrats!! You have no idea how jealous I am right now!!

Our situation really doesn't allow it now, but when the kids are out of high school in a couple of years, that's the goal.

I think most of the fun of colorado is doing stuff with the kids..
That's why we made it happen before we had kids. We were afraid kids in houston would anchor us there.

True about the kids. We tried a couple of times when they were young (obviously not hard enough), but never worked out.

But don't rain on my parade. Ha! Still lots of fun when you're older. I still ski and hike a lot. Would camp more if I was there. Also nothing better than golf and tennis in the mountains. No pickleball. That's for "olds" who've given up. Ha!!

Anyone going to GABF this weekend? We are flying in on thurs and going to the festival on Fri. They have a new area this year that will be dedicated to bourbon barrel beers. Where is a good place to watch the Ags beat bama on sat?

I'm here now, just moved my stuff in two days ago. So far I think the Denver area is an upgrade from almost anywhere else. Not cheap but it seems reasonable for the incredible opportunities and everything you get.

May finally have my ticket. Partner was let go from a job she hated and is using the opportunity to look at PA school (She was a BIMS major). In the meantime she's looking for employment with some hands on patient time, and her aunt is a doc in Denver that would employ her without question.

Now, I'm a teacher (hate it) and locked in until June, but it gives us an opportunity to save up, plus I'll continue collecting my paycheck until September and have all summer to move and job hunt.

I know a lot could change between now and June, but things are trending in a great direction. She was always wary of the winters but is finally open to it and living in Colorado has been a desire of mine for well over a decade. Wish me luck!

PS. Open to moving sooner if anyone has a good job lead. Currently teaching high school Forensic Science, but have my BS in Biology and over 3.5 years experience working in a genetics lab for genealogy & clinical research.

I've received a lot more responses from employers since I moved here. It's only been a couple weeks but applying to Denver jobs was pretty fruitless when I was in Montana. If I were you, I would try to get up here as soon as possible. The fish are biting on the job front.

I work a mile from downtown and almost positive we had snow a few times earlier this year.

Do you mean first this season?

Any of you Ags ever organize a day or two during ski season to carpool out to one of the resorts to ski? If not I'd be interested in trying to get something together for at least a day this winter. I have the Epic pass for Breckinridge, Keystone and ABasin.

Anybody interested in buying a Honda EU 2000i? Picked it up with a second one at an estate sale and don't need both. No clue on hours, but it runs like it should. Will be in Denver this weekend (coming from the West Slope) and would like to off-load this thing.

Normal sales price on these used is $750-800. I'll take $675, firm. Can send photos/video of it running.

The fish don't bite much until you show up. Again, if I were you I would hurry up and get up here as soon as possible. This place far outranks most places IMO. Of course, if everyone thought like me, Colorado would be the most populous state in the country lol.

I will be relocating to Denver in the next few months for my husbands job. I have 11 years in upstream Oil and Gas Supply Chain experience across all areas of Supply Chain (Category Management, Procurement, Sourcing, Contract Management, Materials Management, Supplier Performance Management), 3 years management experience and also completed a SAP implementation for Supply Chain. If you know of any companies that may be looking for similar experience, please let me know. I appreciate the help!
