We're close to the southridge rec center. Wanted to be close to one of them. I have no idea if that's close to anything else.

and this is just a rental so we can scout things out a bit better.

Right around the corner. Let us know if we can help in any way. Welcome to Denver.

Anyone been to topgolf since it's opened? Curious as to if the crowds have dissipated yet.
Was there last Thursday around 2pm. Very, very busy. I was told to expect 3+ hour waits Friday and Saturday nights. Pro tip: show up on a random weekday just to get your $5.00 membership card. Cuts out a lot of the wait on the busy times.
Yea I already have my card from when I play in Texas. I just don't want to drive up from the springs and get stuck in a ridiculous wait like that. appreciate the heads up.

Appreciate that man. I'm learning that we have accumulated too much crap in the last few years. Makes moving a beast. But we'll be there soon enough...target date is Oct 19th. Just in time to go buy my first snow tires.

IMO you don't need snow tires in Denver. They do a good job of keeping things clear. Get a good set of all seasons and you will be fine. I had a set of older AS last winter and was fine. Even going skiing it was ok. Just take it slow and leave space and you will be good to go.

Agreed regarding snow tires unless you have a RWD sports car. Then you better, at least til you sell it for an AWD version. Better yet, sell it in Texas before moving.

Eh, I'd never forgive myself if the wife skidded into a wreck with my kids in the van. Gotta play it safe.

Thanks for the advice though.

A RWD van? Save the tire money, get an AWD, and sleep well at night.

Yeh I would't drop $1k on tires unless it was awd/4wd. If the vehicle is 2wd, and absolutely if it's Rwd, just trade it in.

Rwd can hardly get around on neighborhood streets when there is snow on the ground if its hilly. My old truck couldn't back up my driveway unless I engaged 4wd.

No, it's FWD. I've just been advised to watch the tires.

We're about to buy a subaru as the other vehicle so all weather tires should be ok there.

I'm not a gear head, I'm just cautious. If it's a waste, then I appreciate the advice. If it's marginal improvement, then I'll still probably do it.

Discount Tire is a quarter mile west of the Rec Center

As a gearhead... snow tires treat the symptoms and may make you feel better, but AWD treats the disease and actually makes you safer.

Not driving like an idiot makes you safer.

I don't care how good your tires and AWD are. Drive slow and be careful.

Denver is relatively flat, surprisingly. I've had very few problems in my years there with my RWD car.

You're officially a real Coloradan now.

No kidding.

We are both pretty cautious drivers, especially coming from Texas. That said, it'll take a while to get used to the people running red lights. That is gonna be a big adjustment.

Ah yes - the curious case of colorblind Colorado drivers. I'm still frustrated on a regular basis.

Whenever I'm driving in Denver (or Austin for that matter), any dumb/oblivious drivers I come across I just assume are California transplants.

I feel like all of y'all that are posting about driving must be the ones that contribute to the terrible driving up here. People in Denver do not drive well. If there is any sort of precipitation, people act like there is ice on the roads and drive slow, even if it's the summer. They also act like there is ice on the ground if it is extremely cold outside even if it is sunny and zero precipitation on the ground or in the forecast.

Don't get a Subaru. Everyone and their mom has one up here and they drive the same as people with van's drive. Slow and seemingly oblivious to other drivers around them. Just get a regular SUV with 4WD and it's fine. I've never had any issues and I have a 4WD Yukon. If you're okay with the risk of getting a ticket/fine, I'd buy in Texas and have it registered there for as long as you can. It's $75 a year in Texas for me but up here it would have been probably $700-800 my first few years with the vehicle. It's ridiculous expensive to register your car here.

This was a huge surprise for me after I bought my wife's car here.

Yeah, I initially didn't do it because I was stubborn and didn't want to give up the last bit of Texas in me and thought I'd only be here a couple of years. Now I do it because it's ridiculously expensive.

Nice to see there are so many Aggies in Denver! I know this won't be a horribly original topic here, but just thought I'd ask anyway. I have been offered a job in Denver. We live in the Houston area (Kingwood), and have three kids in elementary and middle school. We likely wouldn't relocate until next summer, but are starting to look at possible landing spots. Kids are involved in sports, and were active in our church. My job would be downtown, but the right place for my family is more important than the commute time. I figure it can't be too much worse than Kingwood to downtown Houston!!

Thanks in advance for any thoughts, advice or recommendations!!!

I can't recommend Highlands Ranch strongly enough. There's a few of us on this thread in HR. Other good spots....Lone Tree, Parker, Centennial. I'm very partial to the southern suburbs if you can't tell.

I'm originally from Spring and Highlands Ranch is a lot like Kingwood minus the pine trees.

Posting on iPad is horrible, but to continue my point...

Lots of parks, good schools, and a vibrant sports community.

My wife commutes downtown every day. The morning is a breeze, the afternoon is usually bad, but not close to her old commute in Houston.

Denver traffic is getting worse with all the growth but it's still nowhere near as bad as Houston traffic. And Denver is much smaller geographically. Doesn't take terribly long to commute if you have to, but I'd still advise that you avoid 25 if possible.

Yeh highlands ranch is only 15-20 miles to downtown. Not 25-30 like the far out Houston suburbs. I drove almost downtown from Parker the last few days at 6:45 am and I was going 70 the whole time.
Schall 02

You can't even compare Denver traffic to Houston traffic. I-10 on the west side of Houston sits at a standstill ACROSS SIX LANES of traffic by 645am. I-25, at its worst, is never that kind of parking lot even at peak times. And if you're up and out early, it's 65+ mph the whole way. That hardly can be called traffic.

I will agree except for I25 north up by Thornton. No matter the time of day, when I go up there it is at a standstill. No construction, and no wrecks. Just. Few mile stretch of stop and go. But it's not a long section so you're through it in 10-15 minutes.

Thanks so much for the replies. With my job, I'd need to be in the office by about 6:30, and could be on my way home by about 3:30pm.

Any thoughts on schools? We'd need middle and elementary, with an eye towards high school. Looks like there are a few big high schools in those southern burbs.

You will have zero traffic issues with those hours. Colorado has open enrollment so you can get your kids into any school, provided there is availability. My kids are in private schools so I have no direct experience but my neighbors and friends are happy in Douglas County schools.

Can I ask what private school you send them to? We can take offline if you would rather. We're just trying to get a feel for all of the options. Thanks!

Can't believe I am saying this.

Wife and I just bought a camper...I never thought we would own one.

Headed to Telluride this weekend for our wedding anniversary!

Where are you going to park it in Telluride? Next to Town Park (can't remember if I've ever seen campers there)?
