Looking for a place to stay in New Orleans in late October. I've never been, and I am looking for recommendations on where to stay with the family. I've looked at hotels and Airbnb's. I am lost as I don't know which areas are safe, better than other areas, etc. Any recommendations appreciated! Thanks!

I was there for work two weeks ago and stayed at the Westin.
Great view of the Mississippi River and walkable to tons of stuff.
But... in August, it was hot and humid and since I drove over from Galveston, parking was $58/night (luckily paid for by work)

Caesar's is under major renovation but everything else seemed pretty normal (although I hadn't been to NOLA since Fall 1992 when we played LSU so I don't really know what "normal" is.

Anyway, the place was not busy Monday or Tuesday but started getting busy on Wednesday and Thursday the week I there.

Orleans Bourbon Hotel. Right behind Jackson Square, easy walking to all of the good French Quarter restaurants.

We usually stayed at the Hotel Monteleone. Close to everything was in a "relatively safe" area.

With that said, we have not been there in a few years.

The Eliza Jane is a cool hotel just outside of all the bustle of the quarter but in Easy walking distance. If you want something other than the quarter, Hotel Pontchartrain in the Lower Garden District is cool and you can take the streetcar up and down St. Charles to get to the quarter and see all the cool houses in the garden district. There's also a cool hotel attached to the WWII Museum, it's some kind of Hilton but I don't remember its name.

As far as safety goes, aside from the normal shenanigans in the Quarter, anything south of Esplanade and North of highway 90 between IH 10 and the river is decent. I personally wouldn't rent a house any further north than Esplanade but I don't remember the immediate area being too bad. Anything along Canal St. is going to be busy and expensive. Depends on what vibe you're going for. The Roosevelt is very cool and has a lot of history.

Along St. Charles and Magazine streets are mostly okay, the garden district in general is decent. I'd stay away from anything north of IH-10 towards the lake, and for the love of God don't book anything anywhere close to New Orleans East (I.e. over by the Lakefront Airport).

Thanks everyone! Great info here. I was leaning towards an Airbnb but was definitely worried about location.

I made 7-8 business trips over last 2 years staying around the CBD. Walked in the morning for coffee and evening for dinner and never felt unsafe. Marriott Bonvoy member but rotated based on price, would recommend Westin mentioned earlier, Courtyard French Quarter Iberville, and either Marriott (one near Conv Center was always more $). Didn't love the Renaissance near Conv Center as much.

I'm from NOLA. I return there every few weeks. I don't care where you stay. Just uber to dinner at night. I currently don't walk around in Orleans Parish at night. That includes the French Quarter.

Just be aware of your surroundings if you do.

I second the Eliza Jane, probably my favorite place in NOLA to stay, plus it gives you the balance of the Quarter/CBD and Uptown/Garden District as far as pick your adventure.

The Windsor Court is great. Family friendly. The Four Seasons at the end of Canal is very nice. The Ritz Carlton is also very family friendly. Lots of great choices.

We stayed at Hotel Provincal a couple weeks ago. It was pretty cheap and they have a private gated parking lot, which to me is very important vs an open garage or street parking.

Hotel was pretty nice, I only slept there, and they give you a free cocktail in the bar when you arrive.

It's the opposite end of the French quarter from canal Street. Pretty quiet.

Those are nice hotels. Windsor Court will set you back a few dollars. Not a big fan of the location of the Ritz Carlton. The first two blocks of the French Quarter (between Canal and Bienville) are historically dicey.

Rampart is the bounday... not I-10. Area between Rampart and I-10 is Treme. No fly zone there.

St. Vincent Hotel on Magazine is super nice.
