As we speak, my wife is booking a VRBO for XMas/NYE week in Breck...probably on Peak 9.

I'm sure we will have the mountain all to ourselves...

Look at it this way, people who bought Epic Local passes will have blackout dates that week and can't ski.

So it will be just us and 50,000 other vacationers? Whew!

Eh if the snow is bad again it'll only be 25k.

I just dont like ski towns in summer. I like national parks and forests. I like to have quick access to incredible trails and see protected wildlife. Around Estes Park or Lake Granby are good starting points. But national parks aren't for everyone...

I do love ski resorts for the winter...when the focus is on winter sports...in which I like Vail and BC more than Breck.

We stayed across the street from the snowflake lift over spring break and stayed on peak 7 and 8 our entire trip. The lines over there were short as well as the line to get on the snowflake lift. It did not feel like a crowded spring break week in that area. I'm booking the same location for SB this year as well. Quicksilver lift on peak 9 is a PITA!

Spring break is spread out over about 5 weeks.

Xmas/NYE is ONE week. Can't compare the two.

Restrictions of epic local are thanksgiving week, xmas/NYE, then a day or two for presidents day and MLK day. That's it. There are no SB restrictions, because of this reason.

I'm not going to sweat it. Let the wife have her ski vacation. As long as we have nice accommodations and everyone stays safe, I don't care.

I can't get uptight about this.

We were in Breck the week leading up to President's Day. Never again.

I avoid breck from the end of Thanksgiving until first week of April.

BC, Vail, Copper > Breck

So you never ski breck.... or like bad snow?

and anyone who complains about how busy breck is but shrugs off vail... lol

Breck is a windy ice bowl with crap snow, so I don't really know what point you're trying to make.

You'll be in line forever in vail and be lucky to get in 10 runs in a day, that could easily be the crap snow you described. But you will be able to say you were at VAIL!

Skied over a million vertical feet last year. I've never had issues at vail or BC. It's all about knowing how to stay away from the greens and onto the expert peaks that don't back up.

Breck is a windy and cold AF, Texan, ski hill. Again, locals pick A Basin, Vail, BC over Breck for a reason. The ONLY reason to venture to breck was organix before summit county permitted because they'd still give a local discount even if you were 81620

You can definitely stay away from most of the crowds at Vail if you venture into the back bowls and Blue Sky.

yup amazing how the crowds disappear when you get to the backside in vail.

The few times I've been skiing since I've lived here I do it on like a Wednesday so there isn't **** for a line. I can get 20 runs in by lunch, so I don't have to worry about where to go.

If you keep using the base lifts at Vail on a big weekend, you will of course get stuck in traffic .

You will also be an idiot.

You skiied 40+ days last year?

I need to look at my Epicmix, but that sounds about right. The Vertical ft is a way low.

iIRc, we Averaged around 60,000ft/day+. Advantage of being on the mountain. So, prob closer to 2 million.

We spend more time on chairs than on runs.

Favorite run is Birds of Prey down past Spruce Saddle to centennial and the. Centennial to 1876. That and Larkspur 10x. Great vert and quick/open runs.

Birds of Prey is probably my favorite run in the country. The first time I went to BC years ago I had a buddy that was an instructor there. As we were having beers on the night we got in town he told us to head for Birds of Pray as they groomed it for Thursday. Absolute blast being able to just tip them over and fly.
JustPanda

It's a glorious chair. It and Larkspur are the best. Centennial isn't bad if you ride as singles. You can burn and turn BOP to Cent and then up centennial and back down redtail back to BOP or larkspur.

BOP to Centennial to Rose bowl or Red Buffalo is another fun set.

We were doing laps on Rose Bowl one time and having a great time. For fun's I decided I was just going to straightline it down one of the runs because "hey, there's a big meadow at the bottom and I'll have plenty of time to kill speed before the lift."

Well it turned out I was on a different run than we had gone down several times before because when I got down to the meadow there was a giant mogul field waiting for me. My skis literally stuck in the first mogul and I got launched over ,y tips like something out of a Looney Tunes episode. My buddies were coming down behind me got a birds eye view of the whole thing.

Funny you talk about that run..... I broke my poles, helmet, skis, and got 15 stitches in my face from that "meadow". It went from an epic run to that OH **** feeling in about a nanosecond.

Luckily, I was able to finish the day strong on strawberry park Express since the end hut is just off osprey.

Moral of the story, stay left when you drop into the bowl because straightlining will F up your mellow.

Also, don't try to catch air on the switchbacks off strawberry park. It's a bad idea. Trust me.

Where is the best area to stay in Breck during ski season? Will have a couple younger kiddos in tow so want something that is ski in/out.

If you want something ski in/ski out, I'd say the best place to stay would be on the mountain.

Seriously, only so many places are ski in/out. Pick one. Either go resort route if you want all that jazz, or find a condo/house on vrbo.

There is no way you ski 60k ft+ of vertical in a day, That is complete BS. Post a screenshot of your epicmix. I am a former ski instructor, in good shape, and can run the mountain nonstop from open to close and barely squeak 40k vert skiing bombers.
