wRC+ of 53 with the bases loaded. He needs to be hitting much later in the lineup with those stats.

His abs are awful as well. Either 2 Ks swinging at balls or pops up to the infield

Off topic WAR question for the nerds:

I just saw that Jacob Wilson hasn't made an error at SS all year and his streak goes back over a year (had one ruled an E and changed by the scorer to a FC last night). Then I saw his DWAR is negative and has been every season of his career. I've seen him play. He's obviously got a good glove and has a decent arm with what's got to be great accuracy for no errors since July of last year.

Is his range just atrocious?

The Skinny:

• You don't just stop using the steroids cold turkey, Cal, you ease off them. Because going from 60-125 and a .948 OPS to 12-43 and a .564 OPS is a tiny bit noticeable.
• Julio Rodriguez got that big contract and straight checked out. Last year 32 HR, 30 SB, 95 RBI. This year, on pace for 24 HR, 20 SB, and 68 RBI. Don't worry, you only owe him $140 million over the next 7 years, and all of it is guaranteed or player-option.

Charley's expert analysis: Barring a heroic turnaround, this will end Seattle's stretch of 5 straight years where they won 85-90 games each year, and all it got them was 1 playoff series win. If there was a "Second Fiddle" award in baseball, they'd own it.

He has 1 SF and no walks.

I know that getting an extension done is unlikely considering he's a Boras client, but I'm not sold on Diesel being an ace moving forward.

I don't think the next "extension candidate" pitcher is in the system currently.

Potter and Jagger Beck throw hard enough to have upside but they're still in A-ball and everyone is a reliever risk at that point. Glad we kept them at the deadline, though.

Let me first say that defensive metrics aren't perfect. I think Statcasts' have come a long way, though. They grade him very positively this year-- +9 OAA and +7 FRV. His arm is solid.

DRS still involves some subjectivity. It's hard to know what he's being docked for, but it is likely the range.

BREAKING NEWS: Astros' GM Dana Brown Announces Signing of Player He Met in an Elevator Last Night


Houston Astros GM Dana Brown held a brief press conference Wednesday morning to announce the Astros have added yet another outfield street free agent to the 25-man roster in preparation for their race to 82 wins.

Looking at Brown this year, compared to the previous 2. I think its as simple as the off speed / breaking balls have not been locked in. He's not getting chase and walking too many. His curve, slider, and change up all have negative run values this year.

His waste pitches are up from 8.3 & 8.5 to 10.0
His chase pitches are up from 23.7 & 23.4 to 26.1
Yet his pitches in the heart of the zone are more similar 25.8 to 23.3 to 24.3.
He's not dotting pitches up or making it difficult on batters.

Here's what makes Alvarez's season even more impressive: He's hitting .389/.579/.806 with runners in scoring position -- driving in 51 runs in 72 at-bats, since he has walked 37 times in those situations (including 20 intentional walks). Only two other players since division play began in 1969 have finished with a 1.400 OPS with runners in scoring position: Barry Bonds (three times, including 2004 when he had 111 walks and three strikeouts with RISP) and Mark McGwire in 1996.
