They'll announce he's injured and seeing a specialist. Then they'll announce he's choosing rest and rehab and surjery is not required. The theory partly is you can start with a reliever where it's significantly lower leverage than if they had to come in during the 7th. Worst case is they give up a run when you have a lot of game left.

And then if the bulk guy gets rolling he can go deeper.

The funny thing is that over 153 PAs Nick has been a better bat too, with a .709 OPS and 102 OPS+ to Altuve's .696 OPS and 97 OPS+ over 533 PAs.

NA has a .5 dWAR and 1.1 bWAR compared to Altuve's -1.4 dWAR and -.1 bWAR.

The opportunity cost of the drive to 3k is only going to get worse over the next 3 years, which is no big deal if we start hanging out with the Athletics and Angels, but is a more meaningful trade off when the difference between making the playoffs is 1-2 games.
