Last year righty Shawn Armstrong, outfielders Robbie Grossman and Tommy Pham, and infielders Emmanuel Rivera and Amed Rosario were claimed on waivers in August.

Diamondbacks lefty Jalen Beeks stands out as an August waiver candidate. He's owed the remainder of his $1.25M salary this year and will be a free agent after the season, and remains effective against lefties. Beeks is currently on the injured list with back inflammation and is expected to return soon. It's not crazy to think a contender could want to add him to their bullpen.

Other August waiver candidates include Pham (Pirates), DH Josh Bell (Nationals), lefty Andrew Heaney (Pirates), righty Jakob Junis (Guardians), infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa (Pirates), and outfielder Michael Taylor (White Sox). They'll all become free agents after the season and hit the sweet spot between being useful to a contender while not having a ton of money remaining on their contracts. "

Useful bridge until 3-5 spots filled by whatever combo of Arrighetti, Javier, Garcia, McCullerd, Walter, and Pornstache.

Arrighetti could earn some money this offseason if he finishes strong.

Walter is a guy who could be useful as multi inning lefty.

Maybe when Walter comes back he can replace King in the pen. King is a gas can right now.

I still cant get over how Arrighetti got hurt ... inexcusable

He sure would have helped the last 4 months, and hopefully we dont suffer too much performance-wise as he tries to find himself in his first few outings

McCullers should be an opener. He's good for an inning or two before he blows up. He's a dumpster fire as a full starter.

With the excess starters you are looking at possibility of 2 to 3 moving to pen giving you multi inning capability down the stretch.

I want to believe Javier and Garcia can start the rest of the way once they return but feels very hopeful

The trade for Rooney definitely shows Astros not comfortable
