The McNairs are seriously overplaying their hand here. He is nowhere near as popular as his daddy was and might be about to be less popular than Bud Adams' horrid spawn. They have just started putting a semi watchable product on the field after nearly a decade of being a joke of a franchise that let go of several future hall of famers without getting much of anything for them. There is nothing wrong with their current stadium, and we still haven't been able to blow up the old one. I honestly think if a terrorist came in and blew up the dome at this point, they might be able to win a run for County Judge instead of going to jail.

Adam Wexler was adamant about not acquiring Arenado on 790 today. He thought better moves could be made to improve the roster if they chose to but didn't state any specific ones either. Wex seems like one of the smarter guys in sports radio so I was glad to hear his thoughts.

I agree. Better guys could be acquired who may fit better. It'll just cost a lot and should have been done weeks ago.

While he might be right… it seems like it's Arenado or nothing. And if that's the case, it has to be Arenado. Any other moves they are making right now are minor league deals or depth pieces.

This is an interesting breakdown of when to use and not use the ABS challenges.

Personally I think it should be more than two challenges a game. Maybe 5? Or one an inning?

At least til their lease runs out in 2050

Hope Houston doesn't let the Texans hold them hostage for a new stadium
I'll say its one thing I actually respect about international soccer leagues. If the team wants a new stadium, the super rich billionaire owners/teams have to pay for it. None of this getting the taxpayers in the area (who get very little say in the matter) to pay out the ass for it.

I get the offense was the glaring weakness, but they really needed to get another leverage reliever. With Ort hurt, not looking good for Hader and Abreu to have lighter workloads

Yeah I agree. Just sucks we shipped him off and then haven't really seen any of the stuff we thought they would do by saving money.

That's where click was great. He got Montero (when he was good), Maton and Stanek for virtually nothing

If we don't dig ourselves a huge hole to start the season making every game a must win, we can lighten the load on the high leverage guys.

Walkoff double today. Remembering what position a player played in a given year gets confusing when you gotta go back now 20 years.

Walk off homerun for me. I can see where you could have gotten 2 mixed up between IF and OF. I had to really think about the differences between 04 and 05 and then figured it out that way.

Are we really pining over this (and declining) for high leverage?

I say this as a staunch RP defender during his time here and in a big way in 2023, but 2021 Pressy ain't walking through that door. The fastball keeps slowing down (sub 94) and the swing and miss keeps dropping on the spinny stuff (around 30%, it was >40% in 19, 20, 21, and 23).

We still have FA options if we truly are short on RP. Plus they're much easier to find on the trade market than position players.

"The Texans, worth an estimated $6.1 billion according to Forbes, also may have one of the best rent structures in the NFL: They pay roughly $4 million a year to the county in rent, but they often get all of it back in tax rebates.

In seven of the last eight years, the Texans have made more on the rebates than they paid in rent, according to data from financial audits. That means the government essentially paid the team to play at NRG Stadium in those years. The lone exception was 2020."

It's insane to me how owners can keep getting away with stuff like this. The tax payers are subsidizing owner's franchise wealth, which is just wrong. There's almost zero downside risk for the owners as a result.
These "conversations" are worthless because people get overly emotional about things. Especially things they don't know all the details and immediately gobble up propaganda from each side from social media and "the news".

Every deal is different. From what is documented, the Texas contributed to the building cost of the stadium. Other teams around the country didn't or contributed lesser amounts so they have higher rent and different deal structures all together. Both the Texans and Rodeo contributed to the other structures and maintenance / improvements even though the deal says HCSA is supposed to cover those costs. HLS&R built the arena and donated it to HCSA. I can't find the Center, but I thought that was contributed by both as well with HLS&R paying rent and keeping offices.

The reality right now is this;

  • A Houston Chronicle investigation found that NRG needed approximately $264 million in upgrades and repairs.
  • Harris County has only approved $35 million in upgrades to NRG, including a new roof, and audio and video improvements.
HCSA isn't and hasn't been able to uphold their end of the deal maintaining and approving the NRG facilities. They still owe a lot of money for NRG, Daikin, and Toyota Center and are overstretched.

The tenants of NRG have tried working with the and even paying for some maintenance / improvements they weren't required to in order to try and keep NRG working for them. It hasn't let to a solution.

What also isn't discussed are the economic impacts that also pushed HCSA to want these stadiums. The rodeo is a month long event bringing in over 2 million visitors from around the world. There aren't many economic creators like that. And what isn't being said is the city needs that money, but has mismanaged their deals.

So hold on crucifying the tenants until everything is known.

Edit: Sorry. Didn't realize how far behind I was on this thread.

Having a 1B and 3B (whether it is Arenado or Paredes) who can hit above .200 for April and May should help with that at least a little.

We already got one giant unused stadium. Why not two? Then in 10 years we can pay to build a $1B hockey stadium where Astroworld was located and go for the trifecta!

Whether they are unused or not is up to the management / mismanagement of HCSA.

If both the Texans and Rodeo pull out and go to the burbs, Houston's budget crisis isn't going to get better. They'd lose a sizable economic impact for the spring and the fall.

I'd like to see the numbers behind that "need" for $264 million in upgrades and repairs. Sounds like the county is stepping up to pay for the repairs and some of the requested upgrades. How many of those unfunded "upgrades" are going to be purely for putting more money in the pockets of the McNairs and have nothing to do with whether or not the stadium is fit to play or watch football in?

How many times are Houstonians going to have to vote for demolishing the dome before the county actually goes ahead and does it? There is a huge space there that could be put to good use if the HCSA would quit paying their buddies millions every couple of years to "study" ways to redevelop the dome. Newsflash guys, if there was an economically viable plan to do something useful with the dome, it would have happened by now. Just blow it up and move on. And yes, I know there is asbestos and other crap in there that costs money to deal with, but they could have easily paid for those costs by now with what they have paid various consultants to "study" the other possible uses and for ongoing upkeep and maintenance on an unused structure.

He does plenty besides the afternoon show on radio and TV and seems to know his stuff pretty well. Wexler's alma mater may bother some, but he agrees with some here who've been strongly against the move.

Walkoff Double for me. I got confused on Berkman and Chris Burke. I thought Lance was still primary OF in 2005, so I got that one wrong the first time.
