If baseball hadn't banned the shift, technically Bregman and Devers could both play 3B.

Until I looked up his page on B-R, I had no idea how bad Devers was at third. He's led the position in errors every year of his career except his rookie year, so SEVEN YEARS IN A ROW. As far as I can tell on this year by year list of error leaders, no other 3B in baseball history has led the league more than 4 years in a row, and that was in the 1910s.

His high is 24 in 116 games in 2018. Last year he only had 12 but still led the league. The best part is that in the COVID year he had 14 in only 57 games. That's a pace for 40.

Couple brief updates after a conversation I had last night:

- Arenado is still absolutely in play and talks are still happening
- Once again had it confirmed that Montero would be a part of any Arenado deal
- Arenado had agreed to waive his NTC to come to Houston, but after the Tucker trade he wanted to wait to see what direction Houston was going

I've always thought there's no way they're giving Altuve substantive reps in LF just for Dubon to see more time at second base. They had planned on it for a while, but there was always more to it.

We'll see what happens.

If they were to take on Montero, would that mean we wouldn't be receiving money off Nolan's contract?

Any chance we can trade them Jose Abreu?

that makes sense -- Dubon is a bench player who should get about 200 at-bats max

he can't become a part-time starter at 2nd base

If you really want to waste some time today, MLB.com just posted its projected Opening Day batting order and pitching rotation for every team in the league.

https://www.mlb.com/news/projected-lineups-rotations-for-every-2025-mlb-team

Familiar faces in other places include:
George batting 1st for the Blue Jays and Loperfido batting 9th.

Charlie Morton as the Orioles #3 starter

Bregman batting third and playing 2B for the Sox

Correa batting second for theTwins

Kikuchi as the #2 starter for the Angles

Tuck batting 3rd for the Cubs

Verlander as the Giants' #3 starter

Has the Stros' lineup as
Altuve LF; Paredes 3B; Alvarez DH; Walker 1B; Diaz C; Pena SS; Chaz RF; Dubon 2B; Meyers CF
Which basically sounds like Pena's going to set some sort of record for getting left on base for a year

That 7-9 made me throw up in my mouth a little. Hope Chaz returns to 2023 form to make that a bit better.
I get what you're saying and I want to see Chaz return to form but how does our 7-9 compare to the rest of the division or any other club not named the Dodgers?

It feels like he had 12 in our series at MMP alone.

I would hate to give up much with all the money owed.

Baseball Trade Values has him at -16.5.
Montero is at -11.5 (his salary this year)

Theoretically, they would need to throw in $5 M. But Arenado's contract is very confusing.

Payroll wise Arenado is making 21 M in '25, 16 M in '26, and 15 M in '27.
Luxury Tax Wise Arenado is going to be 25.55 M per.

But also $20M of 2021 salary deferred at $2M annually each July 1st 2022-2031 (2% interest) & $30M of 2022-2026 salary deferred at $3M annually each July 1st 2032-2041 (no interest).

And COL will send STL the remaining $20M to be paid out $4M each of 2023-2027.

Devers came into the league in 2017 (barely).

Since 2017 here are the top defenders per OAA & FRV. (min 1000 innings)
1. Lindor 120 OAA / 91 FRV (first in both)
2. Nick Ahmed 103 / 77
3. Nolan Arenado 88 / 33
4. Kevin Kiermaier 79 / 87
5. Andrelton Simmons 71 / 54
--
14. Christian Walker 57 / 43
--
22. Carlos Correa 44 / 34
--
26. Jose Siri 40 / 40
--
36. Jake Meyers 34 / 28

And some of the worst
246. Jose Altuve 2 / 3
--
319. Isaac Paredes -1 /-1
--
361. Aaron Judge -3 / 31 (major difference)
--
367. Yuli Gurriel -3 / -2
--
553. Yordan Alvarez -17 / -10
--
585 Rafael Devers -29 / -21
--
595. Nick Castellanos -69 / -83 (dead last in both)

Count me as one who is seriously concerned about the offense if we roll into 2025 with Dubon as a full time regular

Donovan is the top guy I want, but if Altuve is serious about LF - what about trading for Brandon Lowe? He's got this year and a club option for next. He's the 2nd highest-paid player on the Rays (10.5 M). This is the time the Rays like to unload guys. He's a 30-year-old 2B who hits lefts and crushes RHP.

this. If Altuve is going to be the primary LF we've got to make a move for another bat. I was under the impression Altuve would play 2B 80% of the time with the other 20% in LF, not 85% of the time in LF. If this is going to be the situation I'd be okay with making a move for Nolan and moving Paredes to 2B. I'd rather have Nolan in the lineup over Dubon everyday.

OR even better sign Verdugo to play LF and have another LH hitter in the lineup. Either way I am getting nervous right now.

I'm really coming around to Arenado...our infield would be incredible and now suddenly our outfield has Alvarez/Altuve in LF so although C/RF are a concern at least we have studs for 1/3 of it.

If Chaz can make a comeback and if Diaz's fitness adds some points to his average our lineup is still above average and our SP looks stout. Bully is still a bit of a concern but set-up and back-end are very solid.

90+ wins here we come!

Arenado makes us better in 2025, but I worry about 26 and 27.

He wants two years minimum and nobody has been willing to give him more than a one year commitment so far.

In all honesty, I think the window is cracked this year, with it shutting completely next year and beyond for a little bit.
I could see wholesale changes after this season, especially if things go south.
