Y'all are nuts.
I think Bregman actually wants to be here or in Boston but neither one will pay him enough.
Here's what I now think after the Alonzo deal:
1. Bregman would prefer here or Boston, and as you said, neither were willing to pay him the $30M/yr for 6+ years he was seeking. I think Bregman has faced that reality and has accepted it. Pretty clear he doesn't want do go to Detroit, and I'm confident he doesn't really want to play in Chicago.
2. I think Bregman & Boras approached both the Astros and Red Sox about deals at $30M/yr with opt-outs, probably after the 1 or 2 year mark. I think neither club wants to do those deals.
3. I think Bregman ends up with an Alonzo type deal at this point if he continues to let his pride get in the way. It wouldn't shock me either if he does actually end up in Chicago .
Either way, I'm fine with the situation as I think the Astro are fine without him.
It's ego and ignorance of risk at this point.
A short term, $100M contract with opt outs allows you to test free agency again, potentially a year older and at the risk of:
1. Injury (he's prone to injuries)
2. Performance drop off (significant over the last few years).
If either #1 or #2 (or both) happen, his market value declines significantly. He's still locked in for $100M, but he's also not guaranteed an extra $56M.
And why does he suddenly think that he's going to become the Bregman of 2019 again? He will be 32 years old when he's up for another free agent season next year.
The other thing to consider is that Wrigley field is an awful match for Bregman, so signing a short term deal just feeds into issue #2 above. If no team is offering him the mega deal he wants now, how likely is it that another team next year will match the Astro's offer for the next 5 years, especially if you see poor numbers from Bregman in Wrigley? What about his own legacy as a baseball player, where a poor ballpark can hurt his long-term stats?
If he turns down $156M guaranteed with a chance to have an ideal stadium fit, and competitive team, because Boras is blowing smoke up his ass, he's less intelligent than I thought.
