It's far from a done deal.

I wouldn't rule out yet Arenado either. Don't ask me why but there's still conversations.

Arenado would be colossally stupid. Altuve should be pissed if they go that route. I'd rather overpay Alex 10 times over than have Nolan wasting away on our team.

Arenado never made sense. I would be hard pressed to find a worse guy to trade for right now.

Only way we should even consider Arenado is if he can play above average OF. And even considering giving Bregman 6/156 at this point is peak Bad Crane. Offer him 4/100 with mutual year 3/4 opt outs and let him decide if he wants to keep playing for a championship contender in a ballpark that suits his hitting style or if he wants to go to the great white north and become an afterthought when he can't get it out of the park.

He has a no trade clause, he's not going to waive it to play outfield. He looks at playing third base like Pressley insisted on being the closer.

Unbelievable.

I get working it out with Alex and moving Parades around. However, I do NOT get trying to work something out for Arenado and moving Parades around.

This is trying to do too much and would sour the off-season for me.

If Alex insists on more money, then defer the hell out of it.

Saying 6/156 is not enough is a ridiculous bargaining ploy. If he had a better offer that he was willing to take, it would be over already.

This is trying to squeeze Bad Crane to spend more from sentimentality.

Yup. It made maybe 5% sense earlier. It makes 0% sense now.

Parades feels like Dana. This one feels like Jim.

Reading tea leaves..

A contingent of the Astros front office may have reason to believe 2025 Arenado > 2025 Bregman.

They think, well s*** if we are moving Altuve to LF we might as well get the 3B we think is better.

I doubt Altuve will have as good of an attitude about going to LF for Arenado. And Bregman carries some intangible leadership value.

Definitely very curious.

Altuve should go to Dana and Jim and tell them "I will only switch positions for Alex. I'm still playing 2nd if you trade for Nolan". I know he probably won't, it's not his personality, but if there was ever a time he should make a power move, this it it.

Offer Breggy 3/85 with Opt Outs. Take it or leave it.

After all this Breggy thinks he has leverage?

Man we better not fall victim to this stupid game.

The way I read the tea leaves is this: It isn't Arenado vs Bregman.

I'd bet a good chunk of money it's this: Bregman isn't resigning with us. It's a "contingent of the Astros front office," aka Jim, believes 2025 Arenado > 2025 Parades as 3B.

Dana pursues Parades for 3B and makes it happen. Now the Astros have Parades and still are talking for Arenado? That's Jim Crane.

If Bregman is trying to get more than 6/156 (which is too much money and too many years) tell him to kick rocks.

The Astros need to just give Breggy and Boras our last and final offer with a hard deadline, no turning back after that point in time. Make the deadline public so everyone knows, and Boras will be down one more suitor at that time. Enough of this. Either get it done or move on

no chance we do this. I also think if you stand firm with Bregman he will take it.

I'd tell him its going to go down 10 mill a week starting today. see how fast he takes it. (tomorrow)

Gonna be really disappointed with the org and owner if we go with either Arenado or a higher AAV/longer years offer for Bregs. I'd much rather save the money and make a smarter move(s) at the deadline if we are looking in decent shape.

I wonder if this is just an ego thing. We can up our offer to Bregman 6/190, but then when you get the details it breaks down to something like 6/110 with 80 M deferred from 2031 to 2040. The present value ends up around 6/155 M.

This just isn't how it works though. We don't games anytime soon. There isn't really any big free agents we miss on by waiting.

Why does it need to get done immediately? I too would like to know now, but all parties are going to use whatever negotiation strategies they have.

Maybe it gets done soon, but it isn't immoral for anyone to wait on this.
AggieJ2002
How long do you want to ignore this user?

That's exactly the point ... The Astros have nothing to gain by an extended negotiation. Our negotiation strategy should be our offer with a deadline. If he doesn't accept by that deadline, then we were just being used as a pawn to try to get more money out of Detroit/Boston/etc, and I have no interest in the Astros being a Scott Boras pawn.
tylhair

Could be a viable strategy in this case, you could be right.

Writing an offer and saying take it leave it probably doesn't result in you acquiring many free agents.

Just how much non-monetary capital are we willing to spend on chasing Bregman?

Even if the Astros do end up getting Bregman back, how are the everyday fans going to accept someone who doesn't have a clear loyalty to this team and teammates?

As a fan, I'm beginning to feel I don't like being a pawn in the Boras game.

all this reads to me as Boras desperately trying to save face and to use the Astros as pawns to get more money out of someone else. The problem is the Astros now have a 3B and they dont need Alex. Would be nice to have him back, but the idea of the Astros offering more money that what has already been offered is straight BS imo. IF they do offer more I agree with farmer. some will be deferred and hidden in a way just so Alex can save some face.

In the meantime there is zero reasons why the Astros should rush to get it done. It is obvious Alex isn't happy with any other offers he's gotten so he's the one in a tight spot with a decision to make. Not the Astros, who obviously hold all the leverage.

at this point if Bregman signs elsewhere for an amount that isnt significantly more than our offer he is going to look like a dumbass. And I do not see anyone ponying up much more than our offer.

Especially in a state income tax state.

I am looking forward to not have Jon Singleton hit in the 4 hole at any point this season. I feel like that is offensive improvement.
It's nice not having to root for a player that you're confident you could win a 100-yard dash against.
