Lifelong diehard baseball fan here, but I won't watch a single inning of Dodger baseball this year unless it's against the Astros, even if it's the World Series. Something has to change. I can only imagine being a fan of a bottom 1/3 payroll team. I think I'd probably be done with mlb

So they have deferred basically 4 total years of the Astros entire yearly salary. Or Rangers or anyone else right at the edge of the CBT level.

They are getting 4 years a full team of high level players with no penalty and effectively no cost while they play.

Thats insane.

seems like the biggest loser in all the Dodgers' spending is the Phillies

LAD is a big roadblock in the playoffs for them

Philly should have another good team in 2025 (along with the 3rd or 4th highest payroll)

but all the stars are another year older -- and almost all of them into their 30's now

so Trump is going to make it to the White House...before Bregman finds a new team

would not have guessed that when the Astros season ended back on October 2nd

And yet Manfred just sits on his hands as the game tilts evermore to the "haves" he is allowing irreparable damage to the sport on his watch.

Watching Arizona punk them in the playoffs will be a glorious thing to watch though. /Dreams

Manfred is a total clown but what the Dodgers is doing isn't going to ruin the sport. The playoffs are too much of a crapshoot for them to win 3 or 4 WS in a row.

I really wish they were the previous years replica jerseys and not that new one they made last year. Otherwise, I would buy some.

I'm wondering if this is why they're getting rid of these, making room for a better one next season

Yep. Also nothing is stopping other teams from doing it too.

I have tried to figure out the economics on this, but someone smarter needs to tell me if I am right.

By deferring their payments by 10+ years, aren't ohtani and the other players significantly devaluing how much money they make overall? Because of inflation, the power of a 2025 dollar will be much lower inv2034 and even lower in 2043.

I used the inflation calculator to compare the value of a dollar in 2025 compared to 18 years ago in 2007. The if i promised you $1,000 in 2007 but I didn't pay you until 2025, the purchasing power of that $1000 would be about $667. By that math, the $68 million ohtani would make in 2025 would only be worth about $45 million in 2043. Wouldn't your financial advisor tell you this is a bad idea?

Except it looks like most other players are not willing to do this type of deal with most other teams. It's seems to be a deal mostly limited to LAD. And it does hurt the other teams in the sense that they are overpaying to get players to sign these deals. And the higher the contract to player A is, the higher the contract ask will be for a similar player B elsewhere. They are effectively jacking up the price to play poker for everyone else.

How do we know though? Not much has been said of other teams making major deferred offers to guys so we can't say players are only considering them from the dodgers

I think it is the opposite. Most teams are unwilling to do these type deals because they have significantly less financial certainty than the Dodgers. I've posted a couple of times on this thread about the Dodgers having around 10 years of revenue certainty on their RSN deal that no other team can come close to. It is a $200M plus per year guarantee that dwarfs the RSN deals that almost all other teams are receiving, especially those that are getting haircuts in the Bally bankruptcy.

For context, many small market teams receive less than $50 M per year in RSN rights, and that number is going down for any team without similar guarantees to the dodgers (which is zero to the best of my knowledge), including teams that now own their RSN.

Additionally, the way MLB was supposed to achieve some form of competitive balance was through the luxury tax scheme that would redistribute excess player contracts spending by the big market teams to the small markets. I have no idea of the dodgers deferred deals circumvent the spirit of that arrangement.

This is where Manfred should put his big boy pants on and be a commissioner rather than being a pawn. He knows this is uniquely unfair to all other teams and does nothing.

All we know is that LAD have something like 3/4 of all deferred contract money in MLB. And that number was from like a month ago. It's likely more now. Does that mean only LAD can do it or that only players going to LAD want to do it? Who knows.

If MLB going with Dodgers the way the NFL is with the Chiefs then a lot of time just freed up for many

lol @ you if you think MLB would sit idly by and ALLOW the LAD to go bankrupt, even if events were to transpire to bring about such a possibility (not even remotely likely).

However, if a small-market team found itself in such a predicament, then, well, I have little doubt MLB would require them to undergo unusual hardship undoubtedly inapplicable to baseball royalty like LAD and NYY, say relocation to a more favorable market.
