It's time for a salary cap in baseball..... and no deferred bull****

MLBPA would like a word with you

Never gonna happen without the longest strike we've ever seen that will kill the game unfortunately

MLBPA is a joke as are most unions. I get it. My desire still stands

It's not just the MLBPA. Average payroll per last year was $166 million. Exactly half the teams had a payroll less than that and another 4 were less than $10 million over. Salary cap also means salary floor. No way you're going to convince over half the teams in the league they have to start spending 10's of millions more just to keep the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees in check.

He's Dubon like in his versatility but he's much better than Dubon IMO

Yeah I saw he's utility but since we have Dubon already I was wondering what the plan might be if we acquire him? Like does that shift Dubon to be infield utility while Donovan is outfield utility? Or would that send dubon somewhere else in another move

Are we trying to move dubon too?
Quo Vadis?

We will never move Dubon. He is the perfect replacement level player. 162 g average almost exactly 2.0 war for his stint with the Astros. The great thing about him, is he's a replacement level player at both 2nd and CF. That makes him valuable

Having multilple utility players should be considered a strength.

The Astros could have used several in 2024 given the numerous amounts of injuries the team endured.

Love having Doobie on the team because he can spot play any position except P,C. Defense is average to above average anywhere. Not many in the league with that kind of versatility. He just needs to develop some plate discipline.

the legend of Dubon has grown way beyond the actual performance on the field

he was bad in the outfield last year -- committed 6 errors -- which is awful

not particularly great at 3B or SS either

2B is where he excels

and of course no level of defense justifies 400 at-bats for a .657 OPS hitter

that cannot happen again in 2025 -- no, no, no

Quote:

The consensus among a small sample of rival executives is that the Houston Astros did quite well for one year of Kyle Tucker, supplementing their major-league club with Isaac Paredes and righty Hayden Wesneski while also acquiring a top prospect, Cam Smith.

Paredes, under club control for the next three seasons, is a notorious pull hitter and perfect fit for Minute Maid Park. Wesneski, under control for five more years, is the kind of pitcher the Astros routinely maximize. And while Smith, the 14th pick in the 2024 draft, is more likely to end up at first base or right field than third, his offensive potential is immense.

"He can be a monster," one exec said.

One other thing to consider: Fangraphs estimates that the Astros are within about $16 million of the luxury-tax threshold. If they had kept Tucker, made him a qualifying offer and gone over the threshold, all they would have received as compensation was a pick after the fourth round the same they will get for Bregman after exceeding the threshold last season.

I really hate the rules on Japanese players. When there's a limit they all go to west coast teams or big market like NY where they have more branding opportunities. MLB thinks they are making it more feasible for any team to acquire these guys but it's been the complete opposite.

What happens with Brice Matthews now? Do we trade Peña or can either play the outfield? Lol
Matthews has played some CF -- I think

They think Matthews can be an above average big league center fielder, but I hope they decide where they want him soon and start giving him consistent reps there.

I don't want him to get Pedro Leon'd and yanked around so many different spots that he never finds a true position.

The Astros told Brice they want him to play more outfield, but then he only played infield in winter ball. So, will be interesting to see how much time he gets in the OF in 2025. As far as athleticism, he was the starting QB at Atascacita (sp?) high school, so he has the juice.

This. Pick SS or CF and stick.

Not intimidating at all. Especially if you're a pitcher with a decent slider…

flip a coin?

I still think Chas is closer to '22-23 as a player than '24, and Meyers is "ok" for a 9 hole. But if you're running out all 3...It's not inspiring.

I hate to admit that when I was looking at potential free agent RFs and saw his name I had a momentary lapse in judgement. I thought, "well maybe he could hit a few homers to RF." Then I quickly remembered he averages more strikeouts than batting average points...
