I'd like to keep Framber and see if we can extend him on a deal with early opt outs (similar to Snell in SF)

Even if we only have him for an extra year for 2026 if he opts out that could go a long way.

Pitcher extensions haven't worked out great for us. There's a lot of mileage on that arm and he will be 32 when he reaches free agency. Someone will give him $150+M and that someone won't (or at least shouldn't) be us.

If there's a perfect candidate to underperform after a big contract it's Framber.

That's would scare the crap out of me as a GM.

Here's your potential Mets Framber trade. Gilbert we are familiar with. Limited tools but is a redass guy fans will love and lefty CF bat we need to platoon with Meyers. McLean has an easily starter profile with up to 6 pitches, including a 3+k sweeper. Tong profiles similar to a Javier with an invisiball type heater that just misses bats, just needs to refine control.

I have no interest in re-signing Framber after this season. He isn't young, has thrown a lot of innings, and is a head case. But, I wouldn't trade him now unless the offer is ridiculous. If the Astros are competitive next season, he is your ace and you get a pick when he signs elsewhere. If next season is a disappointment, you can move him near the deadline for a good prospect or two. Some team will always be desperate for a stating pitcher.

They do need to sign an outfielder, though. Their outfield is hot garbage.

I can confirm this but I'll add it's not limited to Arenado.

Not saying your wrong...but fwiw...

I really don't understand going for Arenado. We don't have the prospect capital, and he seems to be in decline.

Bregman is not signing here. Very very very slim chance.

Best way to undo all good will they just got for a great trade

Not sure why I'm hearing from some people like Ben Verlander that this deal is all about Smith. Yes, he's a huge piece, but the deal saves $$$ and replaces Bregman if he leaves. It also positions you with a really good SP or long relief pitcher that can probably improve with Astros coaching. All of these pieces are multiple years of control and are YOUNG leading into their prime before their contracts are up.

Only way this deal is a bust is if all three players underperform expectations. I'd be happy if 2/3 of them perform to what we expect.

I also envision that we will go after an outfielder to improve in that area, and then let Jake/Chas/Dubon compete it out for the last spot.

I also don't think we had any chance of signing Tucker after Soto. No doubt our team approached Kyle multiple times with extension offers and he wasn't interested. So be it. Don't be held hostage by him, and improve your team long term. Biggest mistake would be to let Tucker play a year and get nothing in return.

This team played really well without Tucker in the lineup, and Tucker hasn't been great in the playoffs. Yes, we are weaker without Tucker no doubt about it, but we are stronger over the next few years after that and Tucker's absence can be mitigated if we go out and sign an outfielder that is not going to command 300-400M+ like Tucker is trying to get.

Pitching is always going to be the most important thing, and I feel really good about our Pitching next year. Multiple players coming back after injuries with some legit aces and we bolstered our Ben and SP depth with the latest trade.

I think people get so hung up over superstar players, but just remember that the Astros lost plenty of games to supposedly "scrub" teams that ended up having records around what ours was, mainly because they were all well balanced teams. You don't need superstar position players, you need above average roster across the board.

I don't get the Arenado interest. Maybe we don't trust Paredes to play 3B full time. I don't want to give up much to bring in an aging corner INF. The D is still plus but the offense is not. I think the money we'd owe him could be better used elsewhere.

For it to make sense to me, you'd want Paredes at 1B vs LHP. Then you could flip Caratini to fee up payroll. Arenado would play 75% of the time at 3B and Paredes 25% (ideally vs RHP so a lefty - Singleton or other could man first).

I'm pretty comfortable with this. Love what he did for us but he's not worth the demands.

Now, I can confirm they're looking at moving Caritini.

Arenado should probably be a first ballot hall of famer, but I worry that he's on an Abreu like trajectory.

22- 151 ops+
23-109 ops +
24- 99 ops+

His power numbers have fallen off a cliff.
22- 73xbh
23- 54xbh
24- 39xbh

All in almost exactly the same number of AB's

Hmmmm...this is strange. Why would they want to move him? He was a great backup Catcher. I didn't have this on my bingo card unless he can be moved for a place of need like the OF.

Seems stingy for $6M? Not getting paid an enormous haul and only has 1 more year. Don't think it'd be a good move. Allows you to move Diaz to 1B as a platoon.

If only we had prior experience bringing in a player making a lot of money whose power was falling off a cliff in previous years to tell us how this might work out...if only...

Go thru the roster. There are very few spots where money could be shed. Pressly & Caratini are paid 20 M between them and would be wanted elsewhere. No one is touching McCullers contract with a 50 foot pole.

We shed ~9 in the Tucker deal. If we can get another 20 then we have the CBP to go and sign/trade for 1-2 big names.

I think Crane should eat some money due to his mistakes for Abreu and Montero and to a lesser extent Hader

Does it annoy anyone else to hear people say, or write, "you grew up to be an Astros" with the plural? I know it's probably technically correct, but it sounds stupid

Yeah, just what we need. Follow-up a smart trade with a stupid one. Paredes isn't good defensively but he's not bad enough to do something like Arenado.

I looked at Arenado's season last year and no thanks. He's just a splash name.

This has Crane written all over it.

Yeah Dana you can trade Tucker but only if you get Arenado.

I'm going to miss King Tuck. It was a good trade for both teams. Tucker's post-season head isn't there, he had a rough season with the injury, and he was pretty ticked off about arbitration. However, he's 27 and just coming into his prime output years. Good pickup for the Cubs.

Sad to see him go, but it would have been next offseason anyways if we didn't trade him now. It's a shame his time in Houston ends like this, but it was a good decision to move him now.

Caratini's value is probably as high as it's ever been, so I can understand seeing what the trade market is for him. Maybe we learned our lesson with Chas. We should gauge interest for a guy that's less likely to repeat the previous season's performance. Strike while the iron's hot…or at least before they post a negative WAR season.

Figured as much. I'm on that thread as well. Hopped back into NVDA.
