I'm probably in the minority but I'd rather treat 2025 as a soft reboot and try to get some young talent for 2026 and beyond. Signing free agents to multi year deals I'm good with but if you aren't extending Tucker or Framber it's time to move on (at least one of them).

I'd rather see us go all in for 2025 and maximize Framber/tucker while we have them.

I guess that's really the difference of opinion. Unless they make at least two BIG free agent moves, I don't think they can win a WS with those guys. Even resigning Bregman is basically just last year's team (minus Kooch, who was excellent) and that team was hot garbage in the playoffs and only won the division because of how bad it was. I don't doubt we could win a bad division again but we're playoff cannon fodder.

Max Fried would be my big get if we could sign him and re-sign Bregman. Plus another bullpen arm

For '25:
If you manage to re-sign Bregman, you still need someone to platoon with Singleton at 1st, at the very least, imo. Probably need to look for an upgrade over Kessinger as a bench/utility player. That should be Dubon, but we keep managing to find ways to give him 400 ABs. Then decide if we are still going to roll with the Meyers-Chas OF combo as 8/9 hitters.

Whatever they decide with Pressly will determine further bullpen needs. My memory is that we need some help for the non-high leverage roles?

Zero chance we add 60+M to the payroll for 25 without major offsetting.

This has been my thought as well. We need young talent. The kind that will make a difference in 2026 and beyond. Personally, I'd like to see us trade Tucker, Framber and Pena. And I know that will be unpopular here.

one reason to still go all-in for 2025...

is the randomness of injuries

if the Yankees, Red Sox, or Orioles lose a star player or two...

the Astros might end up wishing they had gone hard for the title

It's always a calculated risk. 88 win teams win a WS every once in awhile. I imagine the biggest difference I have with other posters here is how we are looking 2026 and beyond. I think this team is in real danger of becoming a mediocre .500 team like the Cardinals have been the last couple seasons for an extended period of time. I'd rather set this team up to be able to win 87-90 games consistently the next 3 or 4 years than focus on this year knowing you are losing Framber and Tucker with a garbage farm system.

I suspect this is the issue that was referenced earlier about no one knowing our strategy. Dana is probably being told to compete but do it on a budget and don't trade any core pieces. He's basically stuck with a no win situation because Crane thinks no name prospects like Framber and Altuve fall out of the metaphorical farm system tree.

I think the critical variable in these off-season decisions is whether Dana is excelling in the draft and finding the talent needed to quickly rebuild the farm. That is clearly not a help for the 2025 big league team. But he was hired on the strength of being an outstanding talent identifier.

If the idea from Crane is to keep pushing to win now with the expectation that major league level talent is going to be in place in 3-4 years, then trying to milk the current roster as long as possible makes some sense.

To me the real pivot point is whether Dana is finding quality major league players in the draft and international signings.

I read that as YAINER DIAZ and was very confused and angry as to why we were putting him on the market

So. What 5 teams? Boston, Toronto and NYM have reportedly made the offer, or so Scott Boras' Internet mouthpieces have said. Now the Yankees.

Who else? LAD I guess could do it, but that would mean another insane deferral.

The problem I have is Soto isn't worth $600mm. Ohtani brings in hundreds of millions in marketing in Japan alone not including other countries. Soto doesn't. Because of that, if I were an owner and could afford him, I wouldn't. I just don't see the ROI.

Dodgers pay him $1/game for the rest of his career, then $90 million a year from ages 75-85.

Soto might be given his age, health, batting and his postseason stats.

He won't be 27 until next year's World Series, so you could easily justify 12 years (through his age 38 season) at close to $50M per year

Maybe its just, but Soto strikes me as the kind of guy that is gonna start to ease up once he gets that big career contract.

This makes zero sense
Edit: is also the record for the largest contract in A's history... This reeks of their owner trying to show he's actually making an effort

It's a strange signing, but they were a .500 team in April and the second half of the season. May and June they were a combined 23 games under. They have a good core and need pitching.

And if it doesn't work Beane will flip him at the deadline.

That's an expensive contract to flip. They aren't going to get much back if they want someone to take on the money.
