Feels like the A's have spent their $90.5 million on like 50 players.

On the one hand, good for the Astros for being so good without having to blow 2 billion dollars.

On the other hand I bet we could have saved about 300 million and gotten the same results…

I'm sure it's Bagwell's fault somehow.

Abreu is 58.5. Montero is 34.5. Brantley was $44M (but at least we got one good year for $16M there). I don't think this includes Pressly's 30M.

I don't know that I get anywhere close to $300M, but close enough for the hyperbolic point he was making.

Well...We can start with everyone's favorite coffee slinging barista who's getting paid $17 mil per to play soft toss for the past 3 years.

Dodgers are going to get him for free and the Cards will pay for most of the remaining money. I can see it now.

We could have done it without the below salaries in my opinion.

2022: $43.3mm
LMCJ - $15.95mm
Brantley - $16mm
Castro - $3.5mm
Goodrum - $2.1mm
Baez - $5.75mm

2023: $79.28mm
Abreu - $19.5mm
LMCJ - $15.95mm
Pressly - $15mm
Brantley - $12mm
Montero - $11.5mm
Maldonado - $4.5mm
Taylor - $830k

2024: $86.7mm
Abreu: $19.5mm
LMCJ: $17.7mm
Pressly: $14mm
Ferguson: $2.4mm
Montero: $11.5m
... I'm sure there is more.

Over $209mm of wasted money in my eyes.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that's not what I'm saying.

The LMJ stuff really does suck, but again, that's not even in the free agent numbers from the link.

No one can deny we were all excited for Abreu. But we can also all admit that we've had some pretty terrible free agent luck.

Bohm has way more value than Pressly. I could see it being part of a package.

This is very accurate and spot on from what I've gathered.

Quote:

The baseball world will descend upon Dallas with the Houston Astros still in search of a direction. Conversations with people inside and outside of the organization have yielded more ambiguity than absolutes about their offseason plans myriad options but few conclusions on how to confront a crossroads.

Some within the Astros' organization have sought clarity from decision-makers throughout the past month and a half. Most have been unsuccessful, but front offices aren't mandated to keep everyone apprised of their methods.

Do you think the Astros bring in a president of baseball operations? Seems like they need one bad. Dana is more skilled in the farm system stuff, but he seems to lack in managing the major league roster. We need a lunhow type to manage the vision of the organization.

They've entertained the idea in the past but I think it's one of those things where they'll do it if the right guy becomes available but won't actively try to find one.

Yep, he's torn between Bagwell and Ausmus.. give him another year and he might make a decision.

Options ranked (IMO) from least to most likely:
1. Go for broke and open the bank for a stud like Soto.
2. Sell everything and start over with as many prospects as possible through trades.
3. Split the baby and execute a soft rebuild by trading a starter (Tucker or Valdez, for example).
4. Keep vets until they walk and fill in gaps with a range of free agents on short term deals.

I see a gap between 2 and 3, and then a huge chasm between 3 and 4. I'd put the different percentages as 1%, 1%, 8%, 90%.

I also see #4 as a slow but inevitable bleed out to a hard and painful rebuild. Bottom line, I hope Dana captures lightning in a bottle this winter.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Honestly, the more I think about it -- I like 3 as the best option. It's not writing off 2025, but sets us up in a better position in 26 and beyond.

How about #5

We're not gonna drop 600 million to get a player, but I could see us going after a big name that isn't Breman then making deals(trades) to bolster the 25 team and beyond.

I think the goal should be to keep the window open through the next 3 to 4 years. Get one more title and live in the playoffs for a full decade

yes, keep Framber

and then a starting rotation of Framber, Javier, HB, Big Luis, Arrighetti, and maybe someone else...

should keep the Astros in the division / wildcard hunt for another 5 years
