I kind of like it. Pete will be entering his age 30 season. He's the prototypical slugging 1B. He doesn't play great defense overall, but he can scoop it. He doesn't hit for a ton of average, but he gets on base and hits dingers. Since he became a big leaguer in 2019, he trails only Aaron Judge in HRs. Over the last 4 seasons (take away the 2019 53 HR season), he's still 4th. He won't require any platoon as he hits lefties and righties well. Based on the predictions, he's going to cost less than Bregman and Adames yet bring more on offense than either. So why not?
I was thinking about some left-handed bat option to stick in a corner spot besides bringing back Gamel or Howard.
- Max Kepler - coming off a bad season he could be very cheap. For most of his career, he's been solid with some flashes of well above average. He's a vet who needs a change of scenery. Here is how he's hit RHP the last few seasons (wRC+) 92, 127, 93, 115, 147, & 119. 111 for his career. On top of that he's a plus defender with a above-average arm.
- David Peralta - old dude who's going to be cheap. He just hits RHP well. Fairly consistent throughout his career. Defense is starting to go, but you don't need to be elite to play platoon LF at MMP. Veteran bat off the bench because you know Espada loves his pinch hitters.
The only problem with this plan is 3B. How do you navigate without Bregman? Some combination of Dubon, Dezenzo, Matthews (too early IMO), and then you add a body like Moncado or DeJong. The platoon of Singleton, Caratini, Dezenzo, and Dubon wasn't bad at 1B once Abreu was out of the lineup and Singleton wasn't used vs LHP. I feel like we can cheap out way to success at 1B, I don't think we can at 3B tho.

If this is what they expect to get, there's no way the Astros give it to him (nor should they). Someone may do it, but it'll be a test of whether he was being honest about wanting to win above all else.

Moises Alou had one of the best years of all-time for the Astros: 30 HR, 114 RBI, .355 AVG, 1.039 OPS
MItch Melusky looked like our catcher for the next decade: 26 years old with 14 HR, 69 RBI and hit .300
Daryle Ward was 25 and hit 20 HR in 119 games while Berkman was 24 and hit .297 with 21 HR and 67 RBi in 114 games.
